|Course Description |Chemistry I and Chemistry II are the first and second semesters of a one-year general chemistry course |

| |for the high school student. The course meets the UCSD A-G requirements for a laboratory science and is |

| |a prerequisite for the Advanced Placement Chemistry class. |

| | |

| |Students will investigate the basic principles of chemistry including the structure of matter, the |

| |changes it undergoes, and the energies that accompany those changes. |

| | |

|Goals for the Course |To introduce the student to the major concepts and practices of practical and theoretical chemistry at |

| |the high school level. |

| |To prepare the student to succeed in a general chemistry course at the college level. |

| |To prepare the student meet the California and National education standards for chemistry. |

| |To prepare the student meet the San Diego Unified School district science requirements for graduation. |

| |assignment or due date. In such cases, the statements in the previous assignment policies section apply.|

| |However, excessive absences and tardiness does count against the student’s citizenship grade. |

| |All assignments submitted for grading must be completed in full. Incomplete assignments will not be |

| |accepted, and the recorded score will be zero. |

| |Every assignment submitted for grading must follow the format prescribed by the instructor. Assignments |

| |that do not follow the assigned format will be returned, and the recorded score will be zero. |

| |Every assignment submitted for grading must be neat, and legible. If the handwriting is unclear, or |

| |unreadable, the assignment will not be accepted and the recorded score will be zero. The instructor is |

| |the sole judge of what “unreadable” or “unclear” handwriting is. |

| |If the student is absent from class, it is his/her responsibility to seek out the instructor, at a time |

| |assignments missed during their absence. |

| |Assignments and due dates that are missed because of a single – day absence must be made up within 24 |

| |hours of the student’s return to class. In the case of multiple – day absences, the student must confer |

| |with the instructor within 24 hours of his/her return to class so that a schedule can be developed to |

| |complete missing assignments or develop alternative ones. If the absence(s) are unexcused, the |

| |assignment(s) cannot be made up, and the recorded score(s) will be zero. |

| |The student will be allowed to drop one assignment for each six – week grading period to compensate for |

| |assignments that cannot be made up, and for which no alternative was available or assigned. Final exams,|

| |midterm exams, and certain selected assignments cannot be dropped. |

| |There are no extra credit assignments available to use in place of missing scores, low scores, etc. |

| |Academic dishonesty is not acceptable student behavior. Academic dishonesty is defined as representing |

| |work of another person or persons as your own without giving acknowledgement to their efforts. Any |

| |student who commits or facilitates academic dishonesty will be subject to the school honest policy. |

AMMENDMENT: Distance Learning

11/20/2020

Retakes and Revision Policy:

This science course is premised on a growth mindset and mastery over time. Authentic and lasting learning is best accomplished through effort, feedback, and revision. Students who are not successful on an activity or assessment will be given feedback on how to improve and opportunities to revise their work. For this science course it does not matter if the student’s accomplishment happens the first, second, or another attempt; what matters is the quality of their final product. The goal is to document students’ accomplishments of high quality and relevant science skills.” Assessments: Students may revise any assessments worth more than 20 points. Students can revise and resubmit assessments two times. Students must inform the teacher that they have revised work. The final deadline is three weeks after the initial due date, as long as it is also at least one week prior to the end of the grading period.
