The contents of these letters usually mention such things as memories that you cherish fondly of your relationship, special times you have shared, admiration for their special qualities, or good things that you have often thought of sharing with them, but just never bothered to say.

This retreat will be held over the weekend of______________. In order that this be a special surprise, it is necessary to not discuss this letter with them until after that weekend.

Dear Friend,

On the weekend of _______________, Thursday through Sunday, __________________, will be participating in a very special Christian weekend of renewal called "Via de Cristo," which is Spanish for "Way of Christ." The weekend is a wonderful opportunity to grow in our understanding of God's great love and grace for each of our lives.

Certainly one of the beautiful ways Christ blesses us is through the gift of family. Part of the weekend experience that everyone enjoys is the many different fun surprises. One of these important moments is when each weekend participant receives letters of love from their family members and close friends.

We are writing to you with the hopes that you will write such a letter to your loved one. The purpose of the letter is not to catch-up on news from home or what's happening in your life. Instead, this is a special opportunity to put into writing those words of love and affirmation you would like to express to your loved one. Maybe there have been beautiful times or hard times in you past together when there were words and thoughts you wanted to share, but you remained silent. I would encourage you to take this opportunity to express those words of love.

We are writing to you because you are the key contact person we know of in this person's life. We ask that you would also share this information and request for "love letters" with other significant people in the candidate's life: spouse, children, parents, brothers and sisters, or maybe an aunt, uncle or cousin they might feel especially close to. Small children can draw pictures for parents or grandparents. You might need to make some quick phone calls so that they can get their letters sent in time, but know that your special efforts will mean a great deal to your loved one.

Please Note: Don't forget to impress on the other family members that these letters of love and affirmation are to be a surprise! Shhh!
