ur focus continues to shift from “speaking” to “serving” for 2014.

Lay Servant Ministries is committed to supporting local churches by offering training in the ministries of caring, leading and communication. Our goal is to equip the laity to live out their call to mission and ministry. We hope that God is calling you to join us.

We have two new courses this Fall. They are required for all interested in becoming a Lay Speaker.

Classes will be held at Cokesbury UMC, located at 4990 Dorchester Road. Cokesbury is located near the corner of Dorchester Road and Montague Avenue.

Annual Lay Servant Report

Enclosed is an Annual Report to be filled out by all Lay Servants. Your Pastor must sign the report and it becomes a part of your Charge Conference. After the Charge Conference, the District Office Secretary will forward copies of your Annual Report to Lay Servant Ministry.

We will provide assistance is filling out the form during this session.

Class Schedule:

Friday, September 12th – 6:30pm - 8:45 pm (gathering in the Fellowship Hall)

Saturday, September 13th – 9:00am -5:00pm (gathering in the Fellowship Hall)

Sunday, September 14th – 2:30pm (go directly to class)

Please remember to invite your family friends, pastor and church family to our closing celebration on Sunday, which start at 4:00pm.

Reminders:

If you are going to attend, please get your registration in early, this will help us be prepared. We have to order books and meals.

The classes are as follows:

Basic Lay Servant Ministry:

This course focuses on the many ways Lay Servants are called to be in ministry through such things as leading, teaching, serving, proclaiming the Gospel, disciple-making, storytelling, and growing through personal spiritual formation.

United Methodist Heritage:

The focus is on the distinctive traditions and emphasis of the United Methodist Church, such as history, beliefs, mission and church organization.

Preach:

This course will provide valuable assistance to you as a lay servant. You will learn more about the lectionary, developing a congregation profile and exploring your call.

Leading in Prayer (New)

This advance course may challenge some of your assumptions, test some of your preconceived ideas, stretch your thinking and enrich your prayer life.

Worship thru Music:

This course will explore music in worship and personal settings. You will explore scriptural references to music, our United Methodist heritage of hymns and their origins, the parts of the United Methodist hymnal.

Accountable Discipleship:

This course focuses on the concept of the household of God, the importance of scripture as divine revelation, Wesleyan understanding of grace.

United Methodist Polity: (New)

This course is designed to address why the United Methodist Church do things the way it does. It will help participants get their bearings and consider the specific structural challenges that the Church faces in the 21th century.

**Lay Servant Pins will be available for purchase. The cost is $ 5.00 and $ 6.50.

(Lunch will be served on Saturday)

Note: CLASS SIZE IS LIMITED - SO REGISTER EARLY. PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. NO REGISTRATION WILL BE ACCEPTED BY TELEPHONE OR AT SCHOOLS. DEADLINE DATE IS FIRM TO ENABLE PROPER PREPARATION.

Complete the Registration form below and mail with the NON REFUNDABLE $35.00 fee. Money is refunded only if the class is canceled, deadline has passed or class is full. The Registration form and Fee must be received at the District Office before the deadline date.
