Citing Works Within Text

Cite author’s name and page number/source in parentheses at the end of a sentence before the period: Lowfat cream cheese can save you 300 grams of fat per year (Valenza 35).

If the author’s name is used in your sentence, you may just refer to page numbers:

Copaset argues that “yellow simply does not interact well with khaki” (45).

If referring to the whole work rather than a specific section, omit any reference in parentheses. Berger’s main thesis is that by using motifs, organic unity is easier to achieve.

Citing Gale Research Publications: Contemporary Literary Criticism, 19th Century Literary Criticism, 20th Century Literary Criticism

To cite a previously published scholarly article ( or excerpt of one ) that is contained in a larger work ( anthology, reference work ), you should cite the earlier publication ( the original ), and then cite the source of the reprinted material. [MLA Rule 5.6.7 6th Ed.]

• Example from CLC (reprint of periodical article)

Pollitt, Katha. “Stretching the Short Story.” New York Times Book Review. 24 May, 1981. 9, 15. Rpt. in Contemporary Literary Criticism. Ed. Jean C. Stine. Vol. 27. Detroit: Gale, 1984. 449.

Note that N.p. means no place of publication was given.

If the article was originally published under a different title, the order of the information is reversed, and Rpt. in becomes Rpt of.

• Example from Epics for Students

Rosenthal, M. L. “M. L. Rosenthal.” Epics for Students. Ed. Elizabeth Bellalouna. Vol 2. Detroit: Gale, 2001. 28-31. Rpt. Of “The Cantos.” A Collection of Critical Essays. Ed. Walter Sutton. N.p.: Prentice-Hall, 1963.
