Pierre Foods closing Georgia plant

Pierre Foods has announced it is closing its food processing plant in Cedartown, Ga., and eliminating some products from its lines. The company said the closing will result in the loss of about 153 jobs. The plant's production will be moved to other company facilities in Cincinnati and Claremont, N.C. The plant closure is anticipated to be complete by April. Pierre Foods manufactures pre-cooked and ready-to-cook foods.

Niagara Milk Cooperative closing Niagara Falls milk plant

Niagara Milk Cooperative, a fixture on Buffalo Avenue in Niagara Falls, NY for almost 60 years, will be closed down in May leaving more than 50 workers without jobs.
The milk plant is part of Upstate Farms Niagara and is being closed to avoid a duplication of operations.
Only fluid milk and some juices are manufactured at the Falls plant, the same operations conducted at Upstate Niagara’s larger plants in Cheektowaga and Rochester.

CHF closing Fall River, Ma textile plant

A Fall River, Massachusetts textile plant will end manufacturing operations in March, resulting in the loss of 84 jobs. The plant, which makes curtains, is owned by CHF Industries. Pembrook Chair closing Claremont, NC plant

A majority of the employees of a Catawba County, NC company will be affected as a result of it’s closing. Pembrook Chair in Claremont will shut down after 29 years of operation. There are about 110 people working at Pembrook, a small portion of those employees will be transferred to another plant. News Page closing multiple paper operations

A paper operation in Chillicothe, Ohio will be closed this year as part of a consolidation following News Page's acquisition of Stora Enso. The converting plant in Chillicothe, where 160 people work, along with operations in two other states will be shuttered, eliminating more than 700 jobs combined. The converting facility in Chillicothe is scheduled to close by the end of November after machinery and work are transferred to plants in Luke, Md., and Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.

Georgia-Pacific has announced they are closing their plant on Curliss Lane in Batavia, Ohio.

At least 100 jobs will be lost at the facility. Closure will end these jobs by April. The plant specialized in paper packaging. Georgia-Pacific said the cost of energy and fiber as well as a depressed paper products market were the reasons for the closing.

Polaroid closing two Massachusetts plants

Polaroid Corp is shutting down film manufacturing lines in Massachusetts and abandoning the technology that made the company famous. The Norwood plant is shut down, and Polaroid will soon be winding down activities at its Waltham facility. The closures, set for completion during this quarter, will eliminate about 150 jobs. The Norwood and Waltham plants make large-format films used by professional photographers and artists.

A Cambridge, Ontario auto parts supplier is closing its doors. Cambridge Stampings informed its employees that it will close by April, due to dwinding sales. The company, which operates on Moorefield Street, employed 100 workers as recently as 2001. It now employs 70. Cambridge Stampings makes stamped metal products used in the automotive industry for exhaust systems and car seats using twenty presses ranging from 125 to 1000 tons.

Workhorse Aviation Manufacturing opened in December 2005 and planned to employ 50 people to make components for aging military and civilian aircraft. When Workhorse's government contracts fell through, the company canceled a lease on a 27,500-square-foot building in Kinston, NC and closed.

American LaFrance closes PA fire truck plant

American LaFrance has filed for bankruptcy and has closed its West Lebanon, Pennsylvania plant. The plant, known as Aerial Innovations, had been a partner of and was subsequently bought by American LaFrance. Aerial Innovations had been moved a portion of its operations to West Lebanon, Pa about 10 years ago. Aerial Innovations initially leased a portion of the 176,000-square-foot building and then purchased the entire 13-acre property.

Acument Global to close Gananoque plant

Michigan-based Acument Global Technologies informed employees in January it plans to phase out operations at its Gananoque, Ontario plant and close the facility later this year. Plant manager Terry Randall informed the plant's 79 employees that the plant will close by May. The company has only been working at 50 per cent capacity and there have been layoffs associated with the volume declines in the automotive industry. Acument purchased the company from Textron Fasteners in 2007.

Aleris closing Toronto coil coating plant

Aleris International said it will close its coil-coating plant in Toronto, Ontario. The aluminum recycler and producer said production at the Toronto plant will be phased out during the first quarter and the site will be closed by April. The plant employs 64 and supplies coated aluminum coil for the construction, transportation and consumer durables markets.

Aleris acquired the plant when it bought the downstream aluminum business of Corus plc in 2006. Aleris expects to take a restructuring charge of $5 million to $6 million related to the shutdown. Production will be transferred to other Aleris plants in North America.

Whirlpool moving Tennessee and Mexico refrigerator production
