Dear Cousin:

Enclosed is your copy of the Sherman Genealogy: 1433-2000s - Seneca County Ohio - Part I. This begins with Howland Sherman (1813-1865) and Hulda Titus Sherman (1823-1901) and is updated to include all known descendants through this date.

The genealogy also shows Howland's siblings and both the American Lineage and English Lineage back to the year 1433.

The "Introduction" explains the generation numbering system which begins with the American Lineage and how the records have been logically organized and printed.

We the "Seneca County Ohio Shermans" are indebted to our cousin Alonzo Sherman of Oscoda Michigan whose efforts and computer have stored all of our family records for this publication and any future updates. Alonzo's great-great grandfather Alden Sherman was a brother of Howland Sherman from whom we are descended.

We are also indebted to all the cousins who have furnished input, but especially Jane Brundage (Wickham), Thelma Sherman (Stiverson), Leona Sherman (Adelsperger) (now deceased), Iretha Sherman and Ruth Schaaf, who went that extra mile to make the first edition in 1989 possible. We are also greatly indebted to the many more cousins who made individual reviews of their immediate families to provide this update as of 2000.

For those of you who are interested in more of the older family history you may order any of the various sections as shown in the Introduction, direct from Alonzo at the address show in the introduction.

We hope you will enjoy this history and after reading about your cousins you will decide to attend the annual Sherman reunion at the Hedges-Boyer Park in Tiffin, Ohio on the fourth Sunday of August. Our 81st reunion will be held on Aug 26 2001. Don't miss it.

Very truly yours

Eldon E Sherman

INTRODUCTION

The Seneca County OH Shermans is jointly compiled by Eldon and Alonzo Sherman, and was first published in 1989 by Eldon Sherman, 86 Wentz St, Tiffin OH 44883.

The Seneca County OH Shermans is part of the overall Sherman Genealogy 1433-1990s, compiled by Alonzo Joseph Sherman and Patricia Ann Raths (Sherman), 308 W Dwight St, Oscoda MI 48750. Following is an abstract of the introduction of the overall genealogy for use by the Seneca County OH Shermans.

The system used for numbering our American ancestors starts with Philip Sherman the first "Sherman" in our family who came to America in 1633. The generation number is shown in superscript as Philip1 Sherman. Each following generation is given the next higher number: Philip's sons and daughters are shown as John2 Sherman, Sarah2 Sherman etc.

The generation numbers show the order of the generations, and are not intended to show direct lineage.

All "allied names", for the purpose of organizing this manuscript, are given the generation number of the "Sherman" they are associated with.

The six "English Sherman" ancestors preceeding Philip1 Sherman are shown as Thomas1E Sherman (1433-1492) thru Samuel6E Sherman (1574-1615): Samuel6E Sherman is the father of Philip1 Sherman.

Within a family branch each family group is shown in generation sequence, with the oldest generation first and the youngest generation last.

The information for each family group is divided into three parts. The first part is some summary information. The second part is detailed information about the parents presented in an dated event sequence: Which contains where they were born, lived, died and buried; their occupation; their marriage; and other items of interest. The third part is detailed information about the children: Which immediately follows the parents' information and is in the same format as the parents. Children are shown in order from the oldest to the youngest.

For women, when both the maiden and married surnames are used together, the married name is shown last and is in parenthesis.

References used infrequently are shown as part of the normal text. References used frequently are abbreviated to conserve space and are shown in parenthesis following the text, with the abbreviations explained in the Reference at the end of this paper.

This genealogy is an on going project and is being updated continuously. We have done a large amount of original research on the newer generations of Shermans, starting at generation 6 (Howlands parents), much of which has not been published before. Most information for the older generations have been previously published.

The basic identification of ancestors is complete, to our knowledge. The textual information about the ancestors is quite extensive (over 500 pages) and it is always being added to.

The genealogy is prepared primarly for our family. It is not intended to be published in book form. It is kept on an IBM compatible computer in MS-Word format. This is because it is easier to update, and also it is possible to easily produce a current copy any time one is requested.

We gladly furnish copies of the genealogy at cost, or any part of it, to those requesting it. The genealogy is organized so selected parts can be printed for other people, as generally only our family would find all of it applicable. The parts that are applicable to the Seneca County OH Shermans are:

Sec 2B England Shermans (Howland's English Ancestors), 8 pages $2.00

Sec 2C New England Shermans (Howlands American Ancestors), 12 pages $3.00

Sec 2D New York Shermans (Howland's Parents & Siblings), 21 pages $6.00

Sec 2E Ontario Shermans (Howland's Brother Alden), 40 pages $7.00

Sec 7H The Ohio Shermans - Part I (Howland), 122 pages $10.00

Sec 7I The Ohio Shermans - Part II, some of Howland's siblings:

(Minerva, Catherine, Zephaniah, Nancy), 55 pages $7.00

Sec 7J The Ohio Shermans - Part III

Family Reunion Minutes 1921-1995, 73 pages $10.00

Sec 7S Prominent American Sherman, 2p $1.00

Sec 7W Sherman Wills: 1492-1841, 40 pages, $7.00

The price of copies includes postage in the USA, and a original bound 8½" x 11" computer printed manuscript on plain bond paper. Small sub-sections ordered separately are only stapled. Your manuscript is usually mailed one or two days after payment.

We will also trade parts of the genealogy for information we do not have.
