SUBJECT: Certified Nurse Aide (CNA)/ Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) - JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for providing coordination of unit communications and clerical support for the department. Additionally this position is responsible for providing patient centered CNA cares as directed.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

(UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE SUPERVISING RN)

• Demonstrates knowledge, technical skills, and compliance with hospital policy and procedure in provision of patient care and in the performance of procedures in Outpatient Services

• Accepts responsibility under varied routine, critical, and/or emergency situations for patient care and performance in Outpatient Services.

• Observes, reports to nursing staff and completes accurate and appropriate documentation on the medical record

• Obtains and records blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration, pulse oximetry, height/weight and bedside point of care blood glucose as needed. Reports abnormal findings to the appropriate nursing staff.

• Follows basic infection control principles with strict adherence to universal precautions and additional precautions as indicated by the patient’s condition.

• Observes basic elements of body functioning and report changes to the appropriate nursing staff.

• Maintains a clean, safe, and healthy environment in the patient care areas

• Follows emergency procedures as directed

• Provides safe patient transfers, ambulation and transport of patients as necessary.

• Possesses the knowledge and ability to recognize changes in the patient’s condition that need to be reported to appropriate nursing staff.

• Shows empathy, respect and concern for all persons that are encountered as a result of occupying this position. This includes patients, their family members, visitors, and staff accessing any service or in any department of Bonner General Health. This is not limited to personal contact only and is expected to include all contact, by any means.

• Provides excellent care of clients without regard to race, color, sex, sexual orientation, age, religion, illness or national origin.

• Responsible for establishing and maintaining healthy interpersonal relationships with all staff members

• Provides clerical support for the department. This includes tasks such as telephone reception, receiving and routing messages, referring patient care, medical care and medication calls to the nursing staff, proficiently using the in-house telephone, paging system and call light system, organizing correspondence and compiling department reports/statistics

• Functions as receptionist for patients/visitors requiring information or assistance

• Prepares patients charts and maintains patient’s medical records.

• Demonstrates knowledge of medical terminology.

• Proficiently uses hospital software programs

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (cont.)

• Provides clerical support regarding patient charts, faxes and information. This includes scanning appropriate documents into the patient’s Electronic Medical Record.

• Responsible for the accurate daily entry of patient charges into the Electronic Medical Record. This will include reconciliation of patient charges, the review of rejected charges and any appropriate corrections necessary to ensure charge accuracy and accountability.

• Schedules patients for outpatient clinic visits in the Community Wide Scheduling system

• Responsible for ordering office and department supplies, to include maintaining inventory of the department’s forms and patient education materials.

• Stays focused and calm with multiple task interruptions, pressures and emergency situations

• Demonstrates compliance with hospital safety policies and procedure

• Demonstrates the ability to communicate and receive constructive feedback in a positive manner.

• Utilizes the chain-of-command appropriately for reporting problems, concerns or issues.

• Strictly adheres to the confidentiality policy of the hospital. Maintains strict confidentiality regarding knowledge of all patient information (HIPAA), confidential staff and hospital business

• Acts that require nursing assessment or diagnosis

• Establishment of a plan of care or teaching

• The exercise of nursing judgment

• Procedures requiring specialized nursing knowledge, skills or techniques

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

BGH maintains the right to establish work schedules and to be assured of an employee’s attendance when scheduled. Maintaining regular attendance and punctuality is a required Essential Function of this position

Maintains licenses and certifications necessary to perform the job functions as required by State and hospital policies

Recognizes the important part this position plays in Performance Improvement of the on-going delivery of care, as outlined in the Bonner General Health Mission Statement

Skills:

← Ability to read, write legibly and comprehend the written and spoken word in English

← Keyboarding skills of 40 words per minute

← Knowledge of medical terminology

← Able to carry out directions of nursing and or physician staff

← Ability to note changes in conditions that should be report

← Demonstrates basic understanding of principles of nutrition, the aging process and emotional problems of illness

← Successful staff will have an interest in maintaining and increasing health care skills

← Empathetic attitude toward the ill, the dying, and their loved ones

← Commitment to work with interdisciplinary team members, other staff , and volunteers

← Maturity and ability to deal effectively with the demands of the job

← Requires basic computer literacy and ability to effectively learn new software programs

⋄ Ability to coordinate multiple, concurrent communications and tasks

• Education:

← High School diploma or equivalency

← Successful completion of a Certified Nurse Aide course

• Experience: Minimum of one year of experience as a clerk or receptionist in a Medical setting

Licensure/Certification:

• Current State of Idaho Certified Nurse Aide

• Certificate of competency in Health Unit Coordinating or Certification through NAHUC preferred

• Current CPR certification

• Supervisory: None

• Supervised By: Outpatient Services Manager

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• Job allows employee to vary physical position or activity for comfort

• In a normal work day, may be required to stand and/or walk for 8 hours or longer

Note: Employees are responsible for safely moving, lifting and handling all supplies, equipment and patient care needs. Safe lifting practice is expected in all areas of job performance and employees are responsible to request help whenever needed, regardless of the weight, using available assistance, i.e. lifting devices or additional staff.
