DATA FORMS AND CODING INSTRUCTIONS

Inventory Dataforms for RaptorsStandards for Components of British Columbia's Biodiversity No. 11 [Forms]Prepared by Ministry of Environment, Ecosystems Branch for theResources Information Standards CommitteeMarch 2009Version 3.0Using RISC Inventory Dataforms for Data Collection in the FieldBackground The inventory dataforms were originally designed to accommodate the collection of a large variety of data. In contrast, the Wildlife Species Inventory (WSI) Data Capture Templates (hereafter referred to as data templates) were designed to only capture information needed to answer basic questions such as: what species was observed, where, when and how many were observed? The associated Instructions file shows the relationship between the dataforms and the data templates by describing which fields on the dataforms can be transcribed into which fields in the data templates.Using the DataformsThese inventory dataforms may be modified and used for data collection in the field. However, your data must be submitted using the WSI Data Capture Templates (Microsoft Excel?), and we recommend reviewing the templates before conducting your field research. Definitions of data fields, and instructions on how to enter data into the appropriate data template, are provided for each dataform in the associated Instructions file. Codes for entering data are listed within each of the data templates.Note: Each dataform contains sections that correlate to the survey design hierarchy. The symbols used are as follows:961390-21590= Design Components which are Blocks, Transects (or Transect Segments), and Sample Stations. Information about Design Components is recorded in the corresponding worksheet in the data templates.96520010795= Design Component Visit. Information about Design Component Visits is recorded along with the Observation information in the data templates. The ‘Date’ and ‘Time’ values in the Excel templates define design component visits. Each unique value of ‘Date’ and ‘Time’ represents one Design Component Visit.965200172720= Observations. Each row in the Excel template represents one observation. Multiple observations can be recorded for one Design Component Visit by entering the same ‘Date’ and ‘Time’ values in multiple rows of the template.List of DataformsAnimal Observations Form- Raptor Aerial BlockAnimal Observations Form- Raptor Encounter TransectAnimal Observations Form- Raptor Call PlaybackAnimal Observations Form- Raptor StandwatchNest Site Description and Nest Status Form (For nest description and tracking of brood success over time.)Animal Observations Form – Other Species ListData SubmissionThe instructions for data submission, are outlined in Species Inventory Fundamentals, Errata No. 3: The online submission site replaces the “Wildlife Inventory Project Description Form”, and the “Wildlife Inventory Survey Description Form”. To register your project and enter your survey description(s), go to the online submissions site at: wildlife observations occur both by naturalists and by wildlife inventory contractors who record non-target species during a formal survey. The 3 options for recording incidental observations information are:the “Incidental Observations” worksheet in the data templatesthe WSI online submission site (requires an ID and permission to access the site) []the online sightings form: []For more information or to contact us, visit the Wildlife Species Inventory website at .
