Collective Nouns and Indefinite Pronouns
Collective Nouns:
• A COLLECTIVE NOUN names a group.
• In a sentence, a collective noun is SINGULAR when it NAMES THE GROUP AS A WHOLE.
• It is PLURAL when it REFERS TO INDIVIDUAL MEMBERS
Singular: The team takes the bus.
The cast REHEARSES the play.
Plural: The team get regular physical exams.
The cast SIGN autographs for the audience.
Indefinite Pronouns:
Not at all subjects are nouns. Many subjects consist of INDEFINITE PRONOUNS.
A verb must agree in number with an indefinite pronoun used as a subject. Indefinite pronouns fall into three groups, as shown in the following chart.
