About the Sponsorship Program

Purpose:

• To sponsor Qatari medical students studying at Weill Cornell Medical College, Qatar and support Qatari nationals pursuing a career in medicine.

• To create equality among Qatari nationals across the various industries (such as oil/gas, healthcare, business, etc.), build loyalty to HMC and help it achieve its vision of becoming a world-class, academic healthcare center.

I. Who is eligible to apply for the program?

Qatari students who are studying at WCMC-Q who have successfully completed their foundation year and have been granted a scholarship by the Higher Education Institute or the Supreme Council of Education and who have an interest in pursuing their medical career at HMC.

II. How to apply?

If the requirements to join the sponsorship program at HMC are met, prospective applicants can visit the Admission and Student Affairs Office at WCMC-Q and meet with Ms. Donney Moroney @ 4492-8517 / dom2013@qatar-med.cornell.edu. The following documents should also be submitted to Medical Education:

1. Recommendation letter from the Dean

2. Personal statement

3. 6 passport size photographs

4. Photocopies of valid passport and QID

5. Secondary school completion certificate

6. HEI confirmation of scholarship

7. Photocopies of official or attested transcripts of course grades from all secondary, colleges or universities attended

8. Photocopies of official results of an approved English proficiency examination: either the TOEFL or Academic IELTS

9. Certified copies of any diplomas and degrees earned

10. Photocopies of official results of standardized external examinations such as the SAT or ACT exams

11. Photocopies of any unofficial transcript of records from the foundation year to the present from WCMC-Q

The Process

1. High school students receive a scholarship from HEI to study Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College-Qatar

2. Qatari medical students who are already sponsored by the Health Education Institute and have been accepted onto the HMC Sponsorship Program shall keep the HEI sponsorship. HEI is committed to continue paying all tuition fees to WCMC-Q.

3. WCMC-Q will complete an application for a student interested in joining the program and will send it to Graduate Medical Education

4. GME receives the application, completes the recruitment requirements and forwards them to HR

5. HR will then contact students requesting that they complete the recruitment formalities and sign an employment contract

6. Students accepted onto the HMC Sponsorship Program will then sign the approved Sponsorship Employment Contract and Consent to Release Information.

7. WCMC-Q Student Affairs will send a student progress report to the GME. It will also update HR regarding the progress of the student the following year

8. Sponsored students will report to Medical Education Department and will be offered counseling and support whenever needed

9. WCMCQ Qatari graduates who are sponsored by HMC are expected to serve HMC upon the completion of their medical education and postgraduate training. If graduates choose to leave HMC before fulfilling their commitment, they will be financially liable to reimburse the corporation all the financial expenses accrued during their studies and postgraduate training.

III. What are the benefits of the Sponsorship Program for Qatari students?

10. For the first four years, students will be appointed as medical students and shall receive a monthly allowance of QR 7,000. They will also have the opportunity to participate in a clinical attachment in any medical specialty

11. Students (senior) who have successfully completed the first four years will be appointed as an intern and will receive a monthly salary and benefits of QR 24,000

12. Qatari students who are under the sponsorship program will have a guaranteed job at HMC as resident doctors once they have graduated from WCMC-Q. They can apply for the Residency Training Program at HMC after completing the matching process

13. Qatari graduates from WCMC-Q under the HMC sponsorship program who are matched in US, Canada and Europe will receive a scholarship from HMC to pursue their training abroad
