SCHOLARSHIP UPDATE

Mount Tabor High School

The WS/FCS will host Financial Aid Information Sessions on January 6, 2011 and January 13, 2011 at 7 pm at the Education Building located at 4801 Bethania Station Road.

Look for scholarship and financial aid information at the web sites of colleges and universities that you are considering. Make sure that you understand how to apply and all deadlines associated with applying for scholarships at each individual institution. You must review information at college/university web sites and talk with college representatives.

Check out local scholarship opportunities at . The Winston-Salem Foundation common scholarship application will be available to complete starting January 1, 2011 with a deadline of April 15, 2011. Some scholarship opportunities coordinated by the foundation require a separate application process.

VIENNA CIVIC CLUB SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: First time applicants must be attendees of Mount Tabor, North Forsyth, Reagan, or West Forsyth or be recommended by a member of the Vienna Civic Club; based on need and merit

Awards: $100 to $500 scholarships

WINSTON-SALEM AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN ESSAY CONTEST

Criteria: Write a 2-3 page essay on one of three topics related to education challenges and opportunities for women; girls who are enrolled in 11th or 12th grade may enter the contest

Awards: First Place-$250, Second Place-$175, Third Place-$100

BOB R. MCGUIRE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP (NATIONAL CHILD SUPPORT COUNCIL SCHOLARSHIP)

Criteria: Senior with overall C average or higher with at least one parent who is a member of the North Carolina Child Support Council or a client of the Child Support Program (either through Child Support services of Clerk of Court services)

Award: $1,000 scholarship

JAGANNATHAN SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Criteria: Seniors who plan to attend a constituent institution of The University of North Carolina (UNC) who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement (average unweighted GPA last year was 3.8), financial need, diverse extracurricular activities, and evidence of strong leadership roles; applicants must file the CSS Profile by February 9, 2011 using the CSS Code 0093; one MT senior may apply

Awards: Four scholarships with maximum award of $3,500, renewable over 4 years

KING’S COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP EVENT

Criteria: Plan to apply to King’s College in Charlotte; exam given on Saturday, January 8th

Awards: Four $5,000 scholarships to four students who score highest on the exam

HOSA SCHOLARSHIP EVENT @KING’S COLLEGE (Charlotte)

Criteria: Outstanding HOSA member who plans to further his or her education in Medical Assisting at King’s College;

GRADY-RAYAM PRIZE IN SACRED MUSIC COMPETITION (THE “NEGRO SPIRITUAL” SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION

Criteria: A vocal competition in the individual performance of arranged Negro spirituals, to provide African-American senior high school students a chance to earn tuition assistance grants for college matriculation; North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia seniors are eligible; competition will be held Saturday, March 19th at University North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Awards: $3,000 scholarships

STATE EMPLOYEES ASSOCIATION OF NORTH CAROLINA SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION

Criteria: Seniors whose parents/guardians are members of SEANC, planning to attend four-year or two-year colleges (separate scholarships based on academic performance and financial need AND academic performance without regard for financial need)

Awards: Twenty-eight scholarships (1r merit-based and 14 financial need) for 4-year colleges; Six scholarships (3 merit-based and 3 financial need) for community colleges

ERICA WOLFE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: Mount Tabor seniors who are members of the girls or boys soccer teams and demonstrate strong character and leadership skills, extraordinary team spirit, concern for others, a positive and encouraging attitude toward teammates, and a genuine lover for soccer; academic promise and financial need also considered

EDWARD KENT WELCH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: Mount Tabor seniors who are accepted to and plan to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and demonstrate academic promise, evidence of strong moral character, genuine concern for others, and school and/or community leadership

Award: $1,500

Deadline: all seniors who plan to attend UNC-Chapel Hill are considered in May

NORTH CAROLINA ALPHA DELTA KAPPA INTERNATIONAL HONORARY SORORITY FOR WOMEN EDUCATORS SCHOLARSHIPS

Criteria: Academically talented, highly motivated graduating seniors from any public or private school in Winston-Salem/Forsyth county who intends to pursue undergraduate degrees full-time at WSSU (one award titled the Elsie Marshall Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a student who plans to major in a teacher education program); minimum GPA of 3.25 and 950 SAT/19 ACT

AUBREY LEE BROOKS SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: Graduating high school seniors in one of 14 NC counties (including Forsyth) who plan to attend NC State University, UNC @ Chapel Hill or UNC @ Greensboro; academic standing, character, leadership, and documented financial need

Awards: Seventeen scholarships, maximum award is $9,500 and a one-time computer allowance of $3,000; also funds to participate in either an approved study abroad, internship, or research opportunities offered through the above universities

Criteria: Exceptional high school seniors who show promise of continued excellence in postsecondary education; GPA (3.5), class rank, and SAT (1875)/ACT scores emphasized; four MT seniors will be selected for nomination by the MT Scholarship Committee

Awards: Several $1,500 scholarships, renewable for four years

FLORENCE KIDDER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP (NATIONAL SOCIETY OF THE COLONIAL DAMES OF AMERICA IN THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA)

Criteria: Recipients will be selected on the basis of character (25%), need (5%) and scholastic record (35%), as well as the merit of an essay (35%) on an assigned topic (comparison of two modern day patriots to two patriots among our founding fathers))

Awards: One $3,000 scholarship and one $1,000 scholarship to two NC high school seniors

PROSEPECTIVE TEACHER SCHOLARSHIP-LOAN PROGRAM

Awards: $2,500 per year for first two years and $4,000 per year for junior and senior years (recipient agrees to work full-time as a teacher in North Carolina’s public schools one year for every year of funding received

Criteria: Need- and merit-based program available to students interested in teaching in NC public schools; must enroll at Elizabeth City State University, Fayetteville State University, or Winston-Salem State University

Criteria: Merit-based scholarship-loan program available to students who have chosen to enter the nursing profession; recipients agree to work full-time as Registered Nurses in North Carolina

The Guide to the Best Co-op Colleges & Employers is available for seniors to review in the MT Guidance Office. The guide identifies the colleges/universities (Johnson & Wales University is included) that participate in co-op programs and provide scholarship opportunities ($6,000 per year for high school students). 2010 KFC COLENEL’S SCHOLARS PROGRAM
