COLOR ACTIVITY

COLOR ACTIVITIES 2-4

ACTIVITY 2

Draw a color wheel or color spectrum with at least 8 hues. Research a bit about color associations: how it affects emotions, behavior, or learning. There are 5 good starting points for your research below. Label the colors on your diagram according to what you found out.

Here are 5 good sources/starting points for RESEARCH:

Source 1: The influence of color on student emotion, heart rate, and performance in learning environments

In this study, six colors (vivid red, vivid blue, vivid yellow, pale red, pale blue, and pale yellow†) were manipulated in a simulated study environment to determine their effects on university students' learning performance, emotions, and heart rate. It was hypothesized that learning, physiological and emotional states would be affected by different colors in private study spaces.

A total of 24 undergraduate and postgraduate students participated in this study. The dependent variables were reading task performance, emotional responses, and changes in heart rate. The results showed that, although participants assessed the situation as relaxed, calm, and pleasant in the pale color conditions, reading scores were significantly higher in the vivid color conditions. Heart rates were significantly affected by hue; they increased in the red and yellow conditions. In addition, the results suggested that, regardless of the degree of whiteness, the hue had a significant impact on participants' emotions; blue increased relaxation and calmness feelings of participants compared to the other colors.

ACTIVITY 3

You’ve been hired to develop one of the following environments to have a specific impact.

Create a PROPOSAL which will include the following 2 components:

1. diagram

2. written explanation (paragraph) of

a. HOW you will you use color (and music) to your advantage

b. WHY those colors were chosen, based on research (refer to your notes from Activity 2)

Pick one of the following 3 options

*OPTION 1 Design an elementary or middle school classroom. It’s the size of Mr. E’s and Ms. Creaseman’s room put together, so you can have different sections to accommodate the following 4 distinct needs: reading, learning new concepts, memorizing facts, creating projects.

*OPTION 2 Design a 2-room casino the size of our gym. One room is for gambling, and the other can be either a restaurant or gift shop. People flock to these places to gamble…but casinos spend an incredible amount of money and time thinking about how to make you spend even more than you wanted to.

*OPTION 3: A 3-room building where clients go to get better: this rehabilitation center deals with substance abuse, anger management, and depression.

ACTIVITY 4

A. Imagine there were no colors. Come up with new solutions for the following issues:

PROBLEM: Without green, red, and yellow, a problem might be that traffic accidents would increase, since those colors give drivers quick visual cues to know when to go through an intersection or not.

SOLUTION: A solution could be

PROBLEM: Without color, a problem might be that animals have difficulty with visual cues in terms of finding mates or recognizing anger/danger. In addition, animals which use color for camouflage or safety would be put in danger.

SOLUTION: A solution could be

B. Cause-Effect: First, think of 1 other problem that would arise if color was gone. There are tons of “if, then” scenarios! Think about sports, about cars, about the animal kingdom, gangs, military, etc. Word your answer like the examples. Then, write out a solution, again following the formula below.

PROBLEM:

Without _(which color?)__, _________________________ a problem might be that____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________, (since, due to, because) ….

SOLUTION: A solution could be…
