During this activity you are going to use math skills to create a quilt block. Next you are going to follow the directions to fill in the quilt square.
Directions: Using your 9” square paper you are going to follow the step-by-step directions to create a quilt square all about you (please use pencil first then go back with color pencil or markers).
1. Take the 9” square and with a ruler draw a straight line down the paper at 3”and 6” both vertically and horizontally. This will create a grid as follows:
| | | |
| | | |
| | | |
2. Lightly number each square 1-9 with a small number starting with the square in the top left corner and continue just like you would read from a book (numbers will be erased before you color your quilt block).
|1 |2 |3 |
|4 |5 |6 |
|7 |8 |9 |
3. Divide square 3 and 7 in half diagonally from the top left corner to the bottom right corner.
4. Divide square 1 and 9 in half diagonally from the top right corner to the bottom left corner.
5. Divide square 2 and 8 in half horizontally
6. Divide square 4 and 6 in half vertically.
Your quilt square should be drawn! Now it’s time to color in your quilt square. You will need to pick 4 colors (needs to be crayons or color pencils) for this next step. Don’t forget to erase the numbers from the above step.
1. You need to make a Key (this is going to show which color goes with what number). Color a box and number it on the back of your quilt square.
#1 #2 #3 #4
2. Color the 4 outside triangles on each corner color #1.
3. Color the center square color #1.
4. Color the 4 center triangles color #3.
5. Color the 4 outside rectangles color # 2.
6. Color the 4 inside rectangles color # 4.
Your quilt square is now 2/3 done. The last step is to add your personal details.
1.Write your full name in the center square.
2. In each outside corner triangle write a favorite (subject, sports team, color, class, movie, food, tv show, etc.). Include the label. Ex. Favorite color – red
3. In each of the 4 inside triangles write a fact about you (accomplishment you are proud of, person you look up to, most memorable event, childhood memory, bucket list item, etc.) Include the label. Ex. Going to the Panama Canal is on my bucket list.
4. In each of the 8 rectangles write a trait that a good leader or good friend should have. (Traits that a great leader should have, such as self-assured and confident).
Congratulations! You have now completed your “All About Me” quilt square.
