Presidents to discuss “teamwork” on OETA before Bedlam football

OSU System CEO and President David Schmidly will join University of Oklahoma President David Boren on OETA’s Oklahoma Forum this Sunday at 1 p.m. for a discussion about how the two schools work together to for the benefit of the state. OSU and OU are two of the state’s biggest economic engines and the two presidents will discuss the many interesting partnerships between the schools. Click the following OETA link for more .

OSU Seniors of Significance announced

Thirty-nine OSU seniors have been selected as Seniors of Significance for the class of 2006-2007. The Seniors of Significance Award recognizes students who have excelled in scholarship, leadership and service to campus and community and have brought distinction to OSU. This group represents approximately 1 percent of the 2006-2007 graduating class and the breadth of the OSU student experience. The seniors will be introduced at a reception tonight. Business professors land best paper award

Congratulations to Drs. David Carter and Betty Simkins from the Spears School of Business. They are winners of a $5,000 Addison-Wesley Best Paper in Financial Management Award. They co-authored “Does Hedging Affect Firm Value? Evidence from the U.S. Airline Industry” (2006) with Dr. Daniel Rogers of Portland State University.

Student named Study Abroad Contest Winner

Caitlin Dixon is the winner of the 2006 Year of Study Abroad Contest sponsored by the Study Abroad Office at Oklahoma State University. Dixon received a $100 prize and a year’s subscription to the National Geographic Traveler Magazine for her response to the challenge, “Give me one good reason why I should study abroad.”  Dixon, an Apparel Design major, has traveled abroad in Europe before with her family.  She plans to study abroad next summer on the OSU faculty-led Design, Housing, and Merchandising program to northern Italy. The Study Abroad office will be awarding a total of $40,000 in scholarships to 60 students. Find out more, click here.

Brazilian Cultural Dinner tonight at Student Union

Get a taste of Brazil tonight at the Brazilian Cultural Dinner set for 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. on the Starlite terrace in the Student Union. The menu includes Brazilian salad, chicken, shrimp and almond sauce, Brazilian pork roast, beef and black bean casserole, Brazilian rice, angu (a cornmeal dish), broccoli with balsamic sauce, and Brazil nut bread pudding. The cost is $7.50, bursar, cash and meal plan accepted.

Cowboy Angel Tree kickoff tomorrow

The OSU Non-Traditional Student Organization (NTSO) will kick off its annual Cowboy Angel Tree program tomorrow (Friday at 4 p.m.) in the Student Union Atrium in hopes of helping more than 400 needy youngsters get their wish for a Christmas gift this year. Simply pick an “angel” from the tree and purchase the items that you want to give that are listed on the angel. You return the items unwrapped to Campus Life office at 060 Student Union before 4 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 1, so they can be delivered in time for Christmas. If you are unable to get an angel, or just want to make a contribution, NTSO will accept cash donations or gift cards from local stores. Have a question? OSU-Okmulgee celebrates United Way success

Congratulations to OSU-Okmulgee where employees pledged $6,774 to United Way, which is more than $1,700 over last year. In addition to raising more, the number of university employees who participated this year was up 12 percent.

“The Lion in Winter” through Saturday

Oklahoma State University’s Theatre Department continues its season with James Goldman’s The Lion in Winter, which will be presented in the Vivia Locke Theatre in the Seretean Center for the Performing Arts, tonight and tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 19 at 2:30 p.m. The setting: Christmas is fast approaching and an aging King Henry II of England is gathering his loved ones, an eclectic assortment of personalities, who are more concerned with their inheritance than exchanging gifts. Contains some adult situations and language. General tickets are on sale now and box office hours are Monday through Friday from noon - 5 p.m. and one hour prior to performance. Wind ensemble to perform tonight

The Oklahoma State University Wind Ensemble will perform this evening (Thursday, Nov. 16) at 8 p.m. in the Seretean Center Concert Hall. The ensemble, which has gained a reputation as one of the most prestigious of its kind, will feature a traditional Bach chorale, as well as selections based on Bach, and Michael Daugherty’s “Firecracker” and  “Red Cape Tango.” The latter is a piece from the final movement of Daugherty’s “Metropolis Symphony.” Daugherty mixes medieval funeral chant with rock and Latin tango rhythms. Former Governor Nigh to speak tomorrow

Oklahoma humorist and former Gov. George Nigh will speak tomorrow (Friday, Nov. 17) at 7 p.m. in the Oklahoma State University Wes Watkins Center auditorium. He will present a motivational speech, “You Can Do It from Here,” that will offer the audience tips on how to succeed based upon his personal and political experiences. A question-and-answer period with the audience will follow the event, which is sponsored by the OSU Student Government Association Speakers Board. Nigh, a native of McAlester, broke several records during his nearly 40-year career in state politics, including becoming Oklahoma’s youngest lieutenant governor in 1958 at age 31, as well as the first governor to win re-election to a second consecutive term in 1979. He also is the only governor to carry all 77 Oklahoma counties in an election.

Sit in on sessions of the First Amendment Congress today and tomorrow

The OSU School of Journalism and Broadcasting is hosting Oklahoma’s Eighth Annual First Amendment Congress, today and tomorrow in the Student Union. Students, staff and faculty are invited to attend sessions of the conference for free. An online program for the conference are available at .  

Informal lunch on environmental sustainability set for next Tuesday

Sustainable Stillwater is teaming up with SES (Society of Environmental Scientists) to encourage OSU professors to converse and collaborate about sustainability in higher education.  A first meeting, designed to get champions and advocates from across the campus (and across disciplines) together, is set for Tuesday, Nov. 21, from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Taylor’s dining room (informal, no host lunch). Taylor's is located in the Human Environmental Sciences building (west). The intent is to develop a quarterly lunch gathering that would help launch a greening of the campus and curriculum and identify parties interested in sustainability research. Mark calendars now for the SHS Symphony Orchestra

The Stillwater High School Symphony Orchestra, led by OSU alum Scott Jackson, will perform a Holiday Concert at the OSU Seretean Center on Sunday, Dec. 17, starting at 7 p.m. The orchestra is working to earn its way to Carnegie Hall to participate in the National Band and Orchestra Festival there next April. It is actively seeking to earn money for the trip by making ensembles available to play for local gatherings, everything from business meetings to weddings and private parties to church and holiday events. Indian students present Diwali Night

The Indian Students’ Association (ISA) will present a drama, music and dance extravaganza showcasing India’s culture and reflecting the festivities of a celebration known as “Diwali.” Also called “festival of lights,” Diwali is celebrated by both Hindus and Sihks at the end of the rainy season, around harvest time. ISA will present two shows at the Seretean Center for the Performing Arts. The first will be held tomorrow (Friday, Nov. 17) at 7 p.m. (show only, ticket $4) and the second on Saturday, Nov. 18, at 5:30 p.m. will include a dinner (dinner and show, ticket $9). Diwali is rated as one of the most popular cultural events on the OSU campus (by ). Current ISA members get a $2 discount. Tickets are being sold near the Chi-O clock from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. through today. They will go on sale at the door tomorrow and Saturday. Thank you from Pig Event coordinators

Thanks to all who helped with the Pig Event last Saturday from volunteers to BBQ buyers. The event was able to raise more than $700 (the target) for the local Saville Center, while providing some handsome prizes for the winners. There were 22 competitors from Kansas, Missouri, Texas and Oklahoma. The Grand Champ was Lotta’ Bull BBQ from Marietta, and the People’s Choice Award went to Smokin’ Amigo’s in Ponca City. Climbing competition this weekend, register now

This year’s climbing event is set for Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 18-19, at the Colvin Recreation Center, starting at 9 a.m. both days. Saturday is the competition and Sunday is the free "Rock On" bouldering clinic with Red Bull's world class boulderer Ivan Greene. The event is open to anyone and there will be tons of prizes given away including an Apple iPod Nano. Sign up is at Outdoor Adventure in the Colvin Recreation Center at the base of the climbing wall.
