ACCOMPLISHMENTS FOR PERIOD

ALUMNI

• Secured 42 nominations for the Alumni Hall of Fame.

• Secured nationally-recognized comedian, Pauly Shore, for Alumni Week and Homecoming.

• Prepared a virtual homecoming plan to engage out-of-town alumni.

• Utilized donor prospecting service to identify 500 top alumni prospects; identifying one major gift prospect.

BOARD GOVERNANCE

• Led by chair Al Casey, the Board Governance committee has focused on their membership responsibilities and will present recommendations for reappointments and new members for three-year terms beginning September 1, 2008; Foundation Council appointments and a slate of officers and executive committee members for fiscal year 2008-2009 at the June 25 Board meeting.

2007-2008 ANNUAL FUND

• Raised $369,821 (89 percent of goal).

• Surpassed 1,150 gifts from 790 donors.

• Launched telemarketing, direct mail and blue line segments.

COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE

• Completed e-mail append process.

• Completed e-mail blast announcing launch of E-Foundations newsletter.

DONOR RELATIONS/STEWARDSHIP

• Prepared and distributed 100 Scholarship and Program Endowment Reports and student thank you letter packages.

• Created scholarship invitation items and reception program book of scholarship awards.

• Hosted over 100 guests at the 8th Annual Scholarship reception sponsored by the Democrat and Chronicle on Wednesday, May 7.  

• Foundation sponsored and supported the SUNY Empire State Diversity-Citizens Bank Scholars’ Reception, on Thursday, May 8. Twenty-three students were presented scholarship awards by John Barry, Vice President, Citizens Bank.

• Attended the Mathematic Department’s Annual Scholarship and Awards Reception on Thursday, May 22, where the following scholarships were awarded to seven students for a total of $6,700; Robert A. Fratangelo Memorial; Stuart R. Porter & Joyce R. Porter; Jan Z. Wiranowski Endowed and the Jan Z. Wiranowski Renaissance.

PAC CAMPAIGN

• Telecomp completed calls for the PAC resulting in $147,600 in total gifts and pledges.

• 261 bricks and 276 pavers have been ordered for the PAC Patio, which will be installed and dedicated in conjunction with the PAC Center on October 14.

MAJOR GIFTS

The Glover-Crask Charitable Fund and the Daisy Marquis Jones Foundation pledged a grant in the amount of $25,000 to support the Summer Youth Sports Program (SYSP) at MCC.

FINANCE/INVESTMENT/AUDIT COMMITTEES

• Completed financial statements for seven months ending March 31, 2008.

• Completed quarterly investment return summary as of March 31, 2008.

• Completed College Annual Giving and Foundation 2008-2009 Budget.

• Sent 4th Field house installment of $1,180,000 to County.

PLANNED GIVING

• Received $500,000 (partial) from the Estate of John and Mary Koch

• Hosted 36 donor prospects at seminar with R. Thompson Gilman

• Delivered charitable gift annuity marketing materials, secured four proposal requests and delivered personalized proposals to prospects.

PUBLIC RELATIONS

• PAC Campaign communications receives awards from CASE (bronze award) and SUNYCUAD (best of category).

• Foundations newsletter drafted.

• Produced MCC Scholarship Handbook.

• “Honors and Memorials” piece developed to support MCC Annual Fund.

• Communications support provided for Gold Star Gala and Scholarship Reception.

• Golf Week contract secured to promote the Scholarship Open (pre and post event articles; tournament set for July 14).

• Invitation package developed to promote Abigail Disney philanthropy event (Oct. 21).

• Communication plans developed for John Koch gift announcement; Alumni Week and Homecoming 2008 (Sept. 29 – Oct. 4) and Abigail Disney philanthropy event.

• April/May 2008 issue of Campus News (internal college newsletter) included article on “Faculty, Staff and Retirees Help Pave the Way to the PAC” and “MCC Welcomes iStan to Campus” (highlighting gift from Kilian J. and Caroline F. Schmitt Foundation for patient simulator).

• Media successes:

- Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education highlights MCC’s new Ibero Action League Scholarship (June 16).

- Golf Week feature on Scholarship Open, includes interview with Brian McMahon (June 13).

- Democrat and Chronicle Scholarship Donor and Recipient Giving Back. Moving Forward “ad” (June 8).

- Rochester Business Journal; Gold Star Gala highlighted within “Seen” section (June 6)

- Jewish Ledger included Scholarship Open ad (May 30).

SCHOLARSHIPS/PROGRAM FUNDS

• In collaboration with Student Services Division increased the number (45 last year; 76 this year) of eligible scholarship candidates for the Thompson Family Scholarship Recommendation Committee which met on Friday, June 6. A total of $61,000 was awarded in scholarships for 2008-09 academic year. 

• Administered the Foundation’s Annual Grants Committee activities. A total of $15,780 was awarded to support the following 2008-09 grants: Wide Format Scanner for Illustration and Graphics; Candy and Confections Curriculum; Improving Inquiry Management; 292-Baby; Conference Room Technology Enhancement (5-264); MCC Foundation/IBERO American Scholars' Support and New York State STOP-DWI Foundation “Friends” Exhibit at MCC.

• Administered the Henry P. French, Sr. Endowed Chair in Business Administration/Economics 2008-09 Grant Committee activities. A total of $4,333.00 was awarded to Professor John Striebich for his Student Center Seminars project.

• Designed and updated current 2008-09 MCC Scholarship and Awards Guidebook to highlight the Foundation’s role in securing scholarship dollars.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Gold Star Gala presented by M&T Bank

• Hosted a sell-out event with 220 guests.

• Projected net revenue = $67,790.

• Realized a 22 percent net increase over last year.

• Developed and sent an evaluation survey to guests.

Scholarship Open, Monday, July 14

• Completed mailing(s) to renew underwriters and past participants.

• Produced and mailed 2,250 registration forms.

• Secured Callaway golf as vendor for tee-gifts for selection by each golfer.

• Secured 26.5 foursomes; 6.5 remain available.

• Completed mailing to secure Honorary Committee members and underwriters.

BOARD AND STAFF AWARDS AND PRESENTATIONS

• Emerson Fullwood was elected to the board of directors of Vanguard and to the board of trustees of each Vanguard mutual fund.

• Lori Van Dusen was recognized in Barron’s April 21 issue as one of the top advisors in the country, placing 84th out of more than 7,000 professionals screened nationwide. This was the fifth consecutive year that Lori has appeared on the list. Lori also ranked fifth on the list of the country’s “Top 100 Women Financial Advisors,” as published annually by Barron’s and appeared in the June 7 issue.

• Howard Konar was named one of 11 members to the United States Holocaust Memorial Council, the governing body of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum by President George W. Bush in Washington, D.C. on April 29.  The Council consists of 55 Presidential appointees in addition to 10 Congressional representatives and three ex-officio members from the departments of Education, Interior and State.  Each will serve a five-year term that expires in January 2013.  A living memorial to the Holocaust, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum strives to inspire leaders and citizens to confront hatred, prevent genocide, promote human dignity and strengthen democracy. Federal support guarantees the Museum’s permanence, and donors nationwide make possible its educational activities and global outreach.

• The MCC Foundation’s Pamela Ann Chesonis Center Campaign, “Help Build the PAC at MCC,” received a bronze medal in the CASE 2008 Circle of Excellence Awards program in the Fundraising Programs:  Campaigns category. Fourteen entries were judged in this competition and one gold medal, two silver medals and two bronze medals were awarded.  The “Help Build the PAC at MCC” also won best of category in the SUNYCUAD Awards of Excellence program in the development category.  Winning entries were displayed during the SUNYCUAD Annual Educational Conference in New York City, June 11-13.

• Brenda Babitz was highlighted in the February 4 issue of Community College Times article “Mind Your Ps in Fundraising.” The article was written by Barbara Viniar, executive director of the Institute for Community College Development.

• Brenda Babitz, Diane Shoger and Mark Pastorella presented at the League for Innovation 2008 Innovations Conference at the Adam’s Mark Hotel in Denver, Colorado, March 2-5, 2008. They covered topics including: Growing Giving—offering proven ways to grow relationships internally and externally; Alumni Support for Your Institution; Delivering a Capital Campaign with a Single Focus and

Evolving Roles on Campus: A Model Leadership Team.

• Brenda Babitz was highlighted in The League for Innovation in the Community College’s April 2008 iStream. The topic was foundation and advancement development and Brenda was asked questions about community college foundation work.

• Mark Pastorella was the featured instructor for Academic Impressions’ “Introduction to Annual Giving at Community Colleges” Web conference on April 1. Mark provided an overview of what it takes to create a successful annual giving program, highlighting successful strategies used by the MCC Foundation.

• Brenda Babitz, Mark Pastorella and Karen Shaw, reunited with MCC alumni in Tampa, Fla., on April 4 and 5. The MCC Foundation, in partnership with PAETEC Holding Corp., extended a special invitation to the MCC alumni living in Florida to attend the kickoff of PAETEC’s five-city music tour. The event attracted over 30 area alumni from all over the state. Alumni had the opportunity to attend a special reception, meet PAETEC Chairman and CEO Arunas Chesonis and his wife Pamela, an MCC alumna, as well as other MCC alumni and friends and enjoy two nights of exciting music at Tampa’s Ford Amphitheatre. 

• Brenda Babitz was a guest speaker at the 16th Annual Council for Advancement and Support of Education Conference for Institutionally Related Foundations (IRF) in St. Pete Beach, Florida, on April 16.  She was one of four panelists who addressed the topic of “Managing Multiple Roles” developed for IRF leaders who manage their institution’s fundraising department, oversee alumni outreach and direct both the foundation’s and institution’s communications. Brenda provided thoughts and tips on how foundation leaders can effectively juggle these many responsibilities.

• Engage alumni through PAETEC Music Tour events in Chicago, Baltimore and Charlotte.

• Select four alumni for induction into the Alumni Hall of Fame.

• Engage over 1,500 alumni and student in Alumni Week and Homecoming Events.

ANNUAL FUND

• Achieve 100 percent board participation in the Annual Fund.

• Close the 2007-2008 Annual Fund, achieving the ambitious $414,000 goal.

• Conduct telemarketing, mail and blue line segments asking over 9,000 alumni, donors, faculty and friends to support the annual campaign.

BOARD GOVERNANCE

Organize and conduct orientation for new directors.

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN/MAJOR GIFTS

• Plan and execute Wolk Center dedication.

• Plan PAC dedication and victory celebration for donors and volunteers.

• Develop plans for endowment initiative.

• Work with the math department to secure scholarship support

FINANCE

• Complete cash flow through next Field House payment.

• Complete next quarter financial and investment statements.

• Complete work on Banner consolidated monthly financial statements.

• Prepare scholarship transfer for September 2008.

• Host Abigail Disney, grandniece of Walt Disney, at a planned giving luncheon.

• Secure 200 attendees at the Disney luncheon.

• Announce receipt of a $700,000 bequest from the estate of John Koch.

• Provide communication support for Scholarship Open.

• Continue development of the MCC Foundation Web site and e-communications.

• Produce summer issues of Foundations and Ideas newsletters.
