Job Title: Family Support Worker

Post No: Family Support Worker 1

Hours: 37 hours per week, one year fixed term contract

Grade: Grade 7

Reports to: Business Manager

1. JOB PURPOSE

The post will be working for Tending District Council within Essex County Council’s Family Solutions Service. The Family Support Worker will provide advice, intensive support and services to children, young people and their families in accordance with the aims and objectives of the service and in accordance with the requirements of Tendring District Council. Act as a lead co-ordinator for additional support services where indicated. Be a motivated member of the service helping to shape improved joint working across statutory, non-statutory and private providers and to maximise the sustainable positive outcomes from families exiting the Family Solutions Team.

2. JOB ACTIVITIES

• Undertake a holistic assessment of family needs and help identify how outcomes can be achieved, ensuring that assessments and intervention plans fully reflect families’ and young persons’ views and aspirations.

• Provide specific practical, personal and emotional support to families in their homes or other settings as part of an agreed plan, which will be reviewed jointly with families, leading to achievement of agreed family outcomes.

• Undertake programmes of work to support children and families to develop their skills to resolve issues and problems themselves, provide them with information and accompany them when needed to help them access other local provisions.

• Work with families, including those with lower levels of complexity, and act as conduit between Tendring District Council and specific areas of specialism, accessing advice and support for the family as appropriate

• Take responsibility for the more complex cases/situations presenting within the service.

• Initiate and maintain engagement with families and also facilitate their engagement with statutory and other appropriate services.

• Negotiate service delivery with the “Team Around the Family”.

• Follow SET Child Protection procedures, ensuring that any appropriate discussion takes place with the Business Manager and / or the Family Solutions Team Manager when child protection or other public protection concerns arise.

• Lawfully share information and work with colleagues to ensure effective planning and delivery of services to families following agreed Team systems.

• Responsible for case-note recording, contributing to report writing and producing and storing management information. Ensure all work is recorded accurately, and in a timely fashion using agreed Systems.

• Work with those responsible for delivering the Community Builder Pilot in Tendring.

3. SUPERVISION AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Post holder will be matrix managed between the Family Solutions Team Manager and Tendring District Council’s Business Manager (or as delegated).

The post holder will communicate with other services and outside organisations at all levels, including the following:-

• Participate actively in regular supervision to review work and ensure effective interventions for families. As part of this, take part in regular professional development sessions designed to ensure that the principles of effective practice are fully embedded in service delivery.

• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of research, policies and procedures, and to have an in-depth knowledge of legislation and guidance relevant to providing services to children and families.

• The post holder should seek the advice of the Business Support Manager / Family Solutions Manager on day-to-day matters and on difficult or contentious decisions.

4. SPECIAL CONDITIONS

• To adhere to the Council’s Grievance, Disciplinary, Capability, Harassment, Equality and Diversity and other personnel policies and procedures including IiP.

• To be flexible in the duties and hours worked in accordance with the workload.

• The above duties will involve having access to information of a confidential nature, which may be covered by the Data Protection Act/Freedom of Information Act – Council Policies in respect of confidentiality and storage must be followed at all times.

• The postholder has the responsibility to take all reasonable care for the Health, Safety and Welfare of themselves and others in accordance with legislation and the Council’s Health & Safety Policy. (Specific duties are outlined in the Policy).

• In the context of this role the post holder will be required to be mobile throughout an operational area, hence, a drivers’ licence and vehicle will be required.

• This post is subject to the completion of a satisfactory CRB Check.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Job Title: Family Support Worker Post No: TBC

EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS/KNOWLEDGE

1. Good GCSE passes or equivalent in English and Mathematics.

2. Knowledge and experience of the application of ICT systems to deliver business solutions particularly word processing, spreadsheets, databases and desktop systems.

3. NVQ3 level qualification in child/youth, community, health or social work (experience of working to level 4 would be desirable).

4. Awareness of factors impacting on and issues facing vulnerable children and young people and families (e.g. disadvantage, poverty, disability).

5. Knowledge of child/young people development, safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children

6. Significant practical experience of working with families with multiple and complex needs

7. Experience of applying safeguarding and child protection policies and procedures.
