Spring Issue March 2005
A SERIES OF SILENTS
If variety is the spice of life, then SILENTS IN THE HOUSE is tasty indeed. Witness what has been presented so far.
September 27, 2003 April 17, 2004
"Festival of Shorts" THE BIG PARADE (Gilmore)
THE SNEEZE (first movie)
GERTIE THE DINOSAUR (early animation) October 16, 2004
THE NEW YORK HAT (Pickford) NORTH OF 50-50 ( Dippy-Doo-Dads)
KID AUTO RACES AT VENICE (Chaplin) IN MY MERRY OLDSMOBILE (sing-along)
COPS (Keaton) HELLO BABY! (Chase)
CASH PARRISH'S PAL (Hart-Western) THE KID (Chaplin)
THE SECOND HUNDRED YEARS
(Laurel & Hardy)
Coming: Saturday, March 19: DOUGLAS FAIRBANKS IN ROBIN HOOD. Fairbanks is at his swashbuckling best in a 1922 portrayal of the legend of Robin Hood.
A big factor in the enjoyment of the series is the person who adds so much to the experience--Juan Cardona, Jr., theatre organist. His accompaniment is always right on. A theatre organist doing a concert may play a selection or a medley and then (clap-clap-clap) turn to speak to the audience before resuming. Juan, however, must play straight through for an hour or longer before the welcome intermission is announced. He makes good use of the Wurlitzer's resources as he enhances the film's moods and action.
Dorothy Bromage, Producer of SILENTS IN THE HOUSE
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
The Clark Wilson concerts are over. We consider them a rousing success. Clark stepped in and helped the organ crew with some last minute details as well as performing two outstanding concerts at Babson and the Shanklin Music Hall.
EMCATOS is truly blessed with some unselfish members who willingly give of their time and talent to help the organization prosper. I would name each one but this would take up the allotted space. Volunteerism thrives in EMCATOS.
This spirit of volunteerism will be needed in the near future as we forge ahead with plans for our 2006 Regional Convention. We have already named some artists who will appear. The latest addition to the lineup is Richard Hills. Richard will preside at the console of the 4/102 Austin installed in Merrill Auditorium in the Portland, Maine City Hall. This event will be part of the Afterglow. An Afterglow is the event held the day following the end of the convention. In 2006, that will be Monday, November 6.
We are going to need more folks to help with the tremendous task of planning for this convention. Your help is needed. Please volunteer for one of the committees. Especially needed are bus captains, registration help, hospitality committee members. (Remember the impressive banquet at Babson during the last regional convention?) Please call Bob Evans (508-674-0276) or email bob@ if you are available to help.
We also have some great events coming up that you'll want to note.
Saturday, March 19, 2005, Douglas Fairbanks in Robin Hood with Juan Cardona, Jr. accompanying this classic silent film.
Saturday, April 30, 2005, Phil Kelsall rocks Babson with the "Blackpool Sound."
Sunday, May 1, 2005, Phil surges at the Shanklin Music Hall.
All three events are sponsored by EMCATOS. Your support is necessary and appreciated. Attend our concerts.
In closing, we at EMCATOS gratefully acknowledge the generosity of Sarah and Garrett Shanklin. The Shanklin Music Hall has often been made available to EMCATOS for presentation of our concerts. We thank you, Sarah and Garrett, for all you have done for EMCATOS.
Bob Evans, EMCATOS President

WANTED: THEATRE PIPE ORGAN RECORDINGS, MUSIC, AND LITERATURE The EMCATOS thrift shop needs your surplus theatre pipe organ memorabilia. Please donate any items that you no longer need, as we can sell them at Babson concerts. We especially want single LP recordings of both pipe and electronic organ music. Also welcome are albums, sheet music, and other literature pertaining to organs. We use the proceeds to help defray the cost of maintaining our Wurlitzer. To arrange for a donation (and pickup if needed), call Lawrie Rhoads at 508-359-2077.
