Creating a Podcast Using GarageBand

• Login into a computer using a local login (student, lhslocal)

• Open GarageBand and click New Project and select Podcast and then click Choose

• Type a name for your podcast episode and click Create.

➢ Note: The default location to save is in the GarageBand folder. By saving this way, the podcast will only be available on this local computer. To learn how to save the podcast to access it from other computers see Saving a Podcast

• A GarageBand window will appear which includes a Podcast Track, two vocal tracks and a Jingles track.

Recording Tracks in GarageBand

• Select one of the Voice Tracks to record yourself speaking.

• Click the Record button to start. Click the record button again to stop recording.

➢ Remember to speak clearly into the microphone.

➢ If you make a mistake, pause for 3 seconds and then continue. It will make it easier to spot the mistake for editing later.

• To preview your recording…Click the Rewind button to go back to the beginning of the track. Click Play to listen to your recording. Click Play again to stop listening.

Importing Audio

• Record your audio on your phone, iPod touch or other device.

• Email your recording to yourself and then download it on to the computer.

• You can import files formatted as: aiff, wav, aac, mp3, Apple Lossless or m4a (GarageBand 09)

• Make sure your audio file is supported file format. If it is not, use the iskysoft free audio converter () to convert your file at home to an mp3 file.

• Drag your audio file into an empty track in GarageBand or the empty area below existing tracks (a new track will be created for the audio file).

Deleting a Section

• Click on the audio track that you want to work with.

• Drag the playhead to a position at the beginning the section you want to remove.

• Open the Edit menu and click Split to divide the audio track into two Sections. Repeat at the end of the section.

• Click on the section you want to delete and then click the Delete key.

Deleting a Mistake

• Position the cursor low enough in your Track Editor (located at bottom of your window) for the point to turn into a crosshair. If you don’t see the Track Editor, click on the

• With the crosshair, select the section of audio you want to delete by dragging across it as shown. Then click the Delete key.

Copying & Moving Sections

• Drag and drop tracks or sections of tracks to move them to different point along the time

• Tracks or sections of tracks can be copied (⌘C ) and pasted (⌘V) as well.

Adjusting the Volume

• Click on a track to select it

• To adjust the overall volume of a track, slide the volume button up/down on an individual track

• To adjust the volume of a section or to fade in/out on a section/track, click on the disclosure triangle to reveal the track volume curve

• Click on the volume curve at the desired points along the track to create new control points (circle buttons). Then drag the control points up/down to adjust the relative volume.

Adding Stock Music Loops & Sound Effects

• Click on the Loop Browser button.

• In the Loops column, select a category such as Jingles.

• In the next column, choose a subcategory such as Cinematic.

• In the next window below, select a sound file. To hear the sound, single click on any selection.

• When you find music or a sound effect that you like, drag it into the Jingles track. Drag it to the position in the timeline where you want it to start playing.

• Adjust the relative volume of the tracks by sliding the volume button on the individual tracks.

• Edit the length, position of the music/sound effects just as you would an audio track.

• To loop (lengthen) a sound effect or music, move your cursor to the upper right-hand corner of the track until the pointer changes to a loop pointer. Drag the loop pointer until the point that you would like the region to stop playing.

Adding Outside Artwork & Audio

• Open the Media Browser by clicking on the button.

• Click on the Photos button. You can only add pictures from iPhoto using the Media Browser. You must import any artwork into iPhoto before you can use it in your podcast.

• Drag the picture you want to add directly to the podcast track.

• You can also add photos from outside of iPhot by dragging and dropping them directly into the podcast track.

• If you have access to your iTunes music library, you can click on the Audio button to access your music. To add a song, drag and drop files into an empty track.

• If you don’t have access to your iTunes music library on the computer you are using to edit….

o Email the song to yourself or upload the desired song to your Dropbox account at home. (Go to to create a free account if you don’t already have one.)

o On the editing computer, download the song.

o Drag and drop the song into an open track just like you did to add a recorded file.

• Alternatively, play the song on another device while recording it directly into the GarageBand track. (Note: You will lose sound quality this way.)

Don’t forget to observe copyright laws when using songs or artwork!

Saving a Podcast to Access it from any LHS Computer

GarageBand software is designed to be used on a local computer. When you created your podcast, it was automatically saved to the GarageBand folder on the computer. Saving this way will allow you to access your project only on the compture which your project was created.

Below are the steps that will allow you to save a Podcast project and access it from any LHS computer.

1. Archive Your Project

• Go to Choose File > Save As

• Select the Desktop as the location to save

• Select Archive Project (When you save a project as an archive, all the audio files, loops, and other media the project uses are saved in the project file.)

2. Log into your Server Account

• Go File on the toolbar > Go > Connect to Server

• Select the correct server address from the server prompt afp://lhs-star is YOG2015 and YOG2016 afp://lhs-star2 is YOG2013 and YOG2014.

• Enter your student username and password.

• Locate your folder on the server and click to open it.

3. Save Your Project to the Server

• Drag your GarageBand project saved on the computer desktop into your server folder.

• Now your GarageBand Podcast will be accessible on any computer.

4. Working on your project on another computer

• Login to the computer using a local login

• Connect to your sever folder following the steps above

• Drag your podcast project folder from the server to the desktop

• Open your podcast project and begin work

• Save and drag your project folder back to the sever when you are finished working

Remember to SAVE often so that you don’t lose any work. (FILE>SAVE)

Publishing a Podcast

• Open the Share menu

• Select Export Podcast to Disk

• Select Audio Settings to Spoken Podcast

• Click Export. Then you can email or save the podcast to a disk/thumb drive.
