Folsom Cordova Unified School District

FAQ’s about Folsom Middle School Registration

When and where do I get a registration form? Folsom Middle School will be registering students for the 2018 – 2019 school year beginning February 13, 2018. Current 5th Grade students will receive a registration form from their elementary school teacher. 6th and 7th Grade students will receive a registration form from their Homeroom teacher. Please return this form along with one Proof of Residency document to your current school by February 23, 2018.

Parents must also update their InfoSnap information to complete the registration process. InfoSnap is found in the Parent Portal on your current school’s website. If you do not have access to the internet, you may call our school office to schedule an appointment to use one of our school computers.

Parents who are new to the district will receive instructions for InfoSnap when they submit registration paperwork. Registration packets may be picked up in our school office beginning 2/14/18.

How will I CHOOSE MY ELECTIVE? All students will take Math, Science, English, History, PE and an elective. During the initial registration process, all students will choose between the STEAM Exploratory Wheel, which rotates every trimester, or a music class such as Chorus, Band, or Orchestra for their elective.

• Music is a year-long elective. Students playing wind instruments would sign up for Band. Students playing string instruments would sign up for Orchestra. We do not offer beginning band or orchestra. Students must have had at least one year of experience with their instrument. If a student has only played the recorder, they may not sign up for band or orchestra. Chorus is open to all students. Students should be aware that they will be expected to practice their instruments daily so they will need to bring them back and forth to school (the band/orchestra room is open before school so that students do not have to carry them around school.) A few evening performances, held throughout the year, are required.

• The STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Math) Exploratory Wheel consists of 3 different classes, each lasting one trimester. Students do not choose which classes they will get within the wheel but will have classes in the areas of technology, computer applications, art, creative writing, home economics, etc. Because all classes will have a STEAM component, there will no longer be a PLTW pathway.

Registration for year-long electives such as Spanish 1A, 1B, Spanish 2, or TA (teacher’s assistant) is done through a paper application process. Enrollment in these electives is not guaranteed so we want every student to choose the exploratory wheel or a music class when they initially register so we know what class to put them in if they don’t get a preferred year-long elective. Applications will be available on our website beginning February 26, 2018 and are due to the Folsom Middle School office no later than Friday, March 9, 2018.

• Incoming 8th grade students may apply to be a Student Assistant for a teacher but this process happens after the initial registration has taken place. Since TA positions are limited and not guaranteed, students must choose either the exploratory wheel or a music class when they initially register.

• Incoming 8th grade students may apply for Spanish 1B or Spanish 2. 8th graders will not be enrolled in Spanish 1A because they will have to repeat it in high school.

• Incoming 7th grade students may apply for Spanish 1A, Spanish 1B, or Spanish 2.

• Incoming 6th grade students may apply for Spanish 1A but will only be placed if space is available after 7th graders are placed. Students with previous Spanish 1A experience, including students from Folsom Hills, must pass the 1A final exam and submit an application to enroll in Spanish 1B.

Can a student take Music AND Spanish? If a student wants to take Spanish and would also like to continue taking band or orchestra, there will be a place for the student to indicate this preference on the application. We will try to schedule the student into a zero period PE class so that the student can take both electives. This option is on a space available basis only and is only offered to students taking Spanish AND Band or Orchestra. Due to master schedule constraints, we cannot guarantee that a student will be able to take both music and Spanish. We will make every effort to accommodate this request, however.

How can my child get into Honors English? The criteria for placement can be found in the Counseling Department section of our web page at fmsweb.

How can my child get into Honors Math or even skip a grade level of math? This information can be found in the Counseling Department section of our web page at fmsweb.

May I view the PowerPoint from the Parent Orientation Night? Yes. It will be posted on the front page of our website.

May I take a tour of the school? When students pick up their schedules in August they will have a chance to walk around the campus and find their classrooms.
