Prerequisite: Student must be at least 16 years of age, be a 10th grader or above.
I. Course Description
Introduction to Cosmetology is a one-credit course that provides students with a study of personal and professional image, ethical conduct, sanitation, and hairstyling. Students also gain initial practical experience in sanitation, shampooing, hair shaping and hairstyling. Upon successful completion of this course, students are able to practice safety and sanitary precautions as they perform basic procedures. Introduction to Cosmetology is the prerequisite to Hair coloring, chemical services, salon management and practices, and state board practicum.
The Alabama Board of Cosmetology board set the guidelines for the course.
II. Instructional Philosophy
Students will be expected to meet all course goals outlined below and be able to demonstrate their understanding of these concepts. The instruction will be application-based with minimal lecture time. Students will learn how to work independently by completing numerous projects while enhancing their cosmetology skills and knowledge. Assignments will require students to utilize academic skills learned in Mathematics, English and Biology. Students’ grading assessment will be based upon individual completion of projects, notebook and testing.

1. Read chapters and complete workbooks on each chapter
2. Complete projects
3. Participate in class discussions
4. Complete lab assignments
5. Complete test
6. Appearance, attitude, and attendance
VII. Instructional Delivery Plan
Each lesson is presented with the different learning styles in mind.
There will be an
1. Introduction which
a. Places the lesson in context within the course as a whole
b. Explain the goal of the lesson
c. Stresses how the lesson will have professional application
2. A related video that shows how professionals function in this area of expertise/or does a step-by-step hands on demonstration
3. Students are given a real live demonstration with step-by-step instruction/students must write a step-by-step instructional sheet.
4. Students then follow the step-by-step process along with the instructor
5. Students do independent practice to turn in for a grade
6. Teacher and students do a review, which involves book work
7. Written and/or hands-on test is administered
8. Students get test results
9. Additional review if given, with the test in hand for relearning/reinforcement
10. Re-testing is done at the teacher’s discretion
11. Projects and book work are put in a notebook under the nine weeks in which work is done
In addition to the structured classroom/laboratory setting, field trips and guest speakers are included to provide a realistic perspective of this field.
Participation in Skills USA allows the student to develop group and organizational skills.
VIII. Assessment Grading Plan
Performance standards: Grade calculation is based on
A 100 – 90 = Superior/Independent worker
B 89 – 80 = Above Average/Semi-independent worker
C 79 – 70 = Average/Dependent worker
D 69 – 65 = Below Average/Barely dependent worker
F 64 or less = Unsatisfactory/Failure/Nonproductive worker
Grade break down
** 20% of grade = Theory – Class Work and Test

**60% of grade = Employability Skills

IX. Classroom /Lab Safety:
1. The Cosmetology department classroom/as well as the lab area and equipment meet the specification of “OSHA”
2. Students are trained to follow all the proper safety procedures according to each task.

2-Poster board (dates will be given for assignments in time to get these)
Camera or phone-to take photos of their work
❖ Just a reminder: Your child will be working with electrical tools and with chemicals in class, but only after going over safety precautions.
❖ Also we will have stylish stylist days every other Wednesday. This is not a requirement but participation is encouraged and averages as an additional grade at the end of the 9 weeks.
