Outcome: Top educators will help you develop and implement strategies to ensure the participation of students with disabilities in a curriculum that reflects California’s content standards.

The six-hour sessions each focus on important aspects of connecting special education curriculum to the California content standards, and include live workshop sessions at

regional locations throughout California.

March 8, 2005 Accessing the English-Language Arts Standards - Part I

Presenter: Dr. Cid Gunston-Parks

Three factors impact comprehension of text: prior knowledge, the language of the author and the strategic engagement of the reader. This program provides several research-based strategies designed to enable teachers to bridge the gap between learners and text. Course presentation involves simulations of some strategies and video for observation and discussion of others. Participants are required to practice and reflect in writing on selected strategies presented in this program.

April 5, 2005 Accessing the English-Language Arts Standards - Part II

Presenter: Mary E. Modell, M.S.

This program is designed to develop knowledge of the basic principles and strategies in curriculum and instruction in Language Arts for students with moderate to severe disabilities. Participants will also develop skills in appropriate implementation of such strategies. Teaching strategies, adaptations of instruction, commercial and teacher designed curricula will be examined. Multiple functional and age appropriate strategies will be discussed and presented. Emphasis will be placed on assessment, planning, and designing instructional lessons.

May 10, 2005 Accessing the Mathematics Standards - Part I

Presenter: George Judd

This program is designed to increase your comfort level in teaching mathematics. You will be given strategies, methodologies, tools and encouragement to entice you into the joys of facilitating and adapting math instruction with your students. You will be introduced to techniques that will enable you to take what you learn today and teach it tomorrow. Most of the activities are kinesthetic, tactile and open-ended. All of them involve hands-on, inquiry-based and standards driven curriculum. You will learn to help students make the connections between math and their worlds. In turn, you will gain experience allowing you to integrate math into other curricular areas.
