FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Aid) – The federal government will determine your eligibility for financial aid for college. This includes grants, work-study, and scholarships. How do you apply?
1) The preferred method is the online application. You fill out the information directly online, saving your information as you go along. Or if you prefer, fill out a practice FAFSA on the Web Worksheet (there are copies in room 118); then just transfer this information online to the computer when you are ready.
2) Students who want to use an official paper FAFSA must order them personally by calling the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-433-3243 (1-800-4-FED-AID). You can request up to 3 copies of the paper application and you will receive the forms in 3 to 7 days.
3) You can also download a PDF version of the FAFSA at FederalStudentAid.. Complete this PDF form on the computer, and then print it out. Or, you can print it out first, and fill it out by hand.

Chicago State University (located on the South side of Chicago) is offering you a television, IPod, or $50 cash. You have to design and build a mousetrap vehicle that will propel itself without leaving the ground, and will stop near a designated line. There will be 2 design workshops for this Mouse Trap 4-Meter Run before the day of the contest. The first workshop will be held on January 26 at Chicago State University. Commitment to Agriculture Scholarship offers $1,500 to seniors who are interested in a career in agriculture. The application is available online at . From the “Corporate Responsibility” menu, select “Youth and Education,” and then click on “Agriculture Scholarship.” Deadline is February 15, 2008.
Northeastern Illinois University (5500 N. St. Louis Ave.) – Presidential Scholars Program – you and your family can attend a meeting and reception to learn more about this program on Monday, February 18, 2008, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. For more information and to make a reservation, call Michelle Morrow at 773-442-4606. The goal of their program is to prepare the best students for future success at the best colleges and universities. This is a completely free program. You can learn about the college search process; you will learn how to finance your college education after you graduate. Get to know the top students from all around Chicago. Study interesting and dynamic subjects. What you learn will help you improve your grades in your regular high school classes, and your future ACT scores. Get experience in university-style classes, from top professors. Enrichment activities will increase your communication skills and improve your math reasoning skills. St. John’s University (New York) – Catholic Student Scholarship is from $1,000 to $2,500; you must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, a combined SAT of at least 1050 and financial need. You must be a Roman Catholic. Deadline is February 15, 2008. The Ozanam Scholars Program offers $10,000 (renewable each year); students work in small groups with faculty to tackle real world problems; you need good grades, a commitment to community service. North Park University – School of Music – has $1,500 to $4,000 scholarships based on good grades and other scholarships based on financial need. You must apply to the school and complete the FAFSA. The Presidential Music Performance Scholarship pays for your tuition. Auditions take place on February 16, 2008. American Legion Oratorial Contest is $1,400 to $18,000 for any high school student. You prepare an oral presentation on the U.S. Constitution. The topic will be found at . For an application contact your local American Legion Post. For more information see Ms. Rodriguez. Deadlines vary.
Riceland Rice/Univision Radio Scholarship is for $2,000. Write an essay on “How will your college education help you to achieve your lifetime goals?” The quality of the essay is the only criterion for selecting the winners. For the application and more information, come to room 118, or go to scholarship. Just fill out the application on the website, print it out, and then mail it with your essay. That’s all!! Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors! The Girls Going Places Scholarship (by Guardian Life Insurance) awards $2,000 to girls aged 12 to 18. Ask an adult U.S. legal resident to nominate you, recommending you as an accomplished young female entrepreneur. How is your business leadership? Have you taken the first steps toward financial independence? Have you made a difference in your school or community or in other peoples’ lives? Come to room 118 or just go to . Burger King Scholars Program offers $1,000 for U.S. citizens/residents with financial need; with a minimum 2.5 GPA, who work part-time (@ 15 hours/week, 40 weeks/year, unless circumstances prevent this); with community service and/or extracurricular activities; the job doesn’t have to be at Burger King. Ronald McDonald House Charities Scholarships are for varied amounts. You must have financial need. There are scholarships for minority students and ALSO for non-minority students. They will ask for your transcript, personal statement, letter of recommendation, and a copy of your parent’s tax return. Come to room 118 to apply, or go to scholarships. National Co-op Scholarship is $6,000 for students with a 3.5 or better GPA, renewable each year, offered by The National Commission for Cooperative Education. Come to room 118 or go to co-op.edu for more information and an on-line application. You must attend one of the participating colleges (including Drexel University, Johnson & Wales University, Kettering University, Rochester Institute of Technology, University of Cincinnati, and more). Kathryn G. Hansen Scholarship is $500 for a senior pursuing a career in an office professional, secretarial, or business-related field in Illinois. The Secretariat, an organization of upper-level civil service employees at UIUC, offers this scholarship. The money can be used at any college/university in Illinois. Best Buy Scholarships are $1,500 to $10,000. You need a minimum 2.5 GPA. They will look at community service, or work experience, and academic achievement. Come to room 118, or apply online at . Go to “Community Relations”, and “Our Programs”. Deadline is February 15, 2008.
AXA Achievement Community Scholarship is $2,000 to $25,000 for U.S citizens or legal residents, with good grades and community or work activities. Go online to axa-. Deadline is February 15, 2008.
KFC Colonel’s Scholars Program Scholarships are for up to $5,000 yearly for a U.S. citizen who will attend a public college in Illinois. You must have a minimum 2.75 GPA. You can start out by applying to a 2-year or 4-year college, as long as you intend to finish your bachelor’s degree. You can graduate in January, June or August. Come to room 118 to apply, or go to . USA Funds Access to Education Scholarships are $1,500, renewable each year, for seniors with family incomes of less than $35,000. Priority is given to ethnic/minority students or students with a physical disability. Come to room 118 or go to . Deadline is February 15, 2008.
Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors. The Sodexho STP Scholarship is $3,000 for students working to end hunger in the United States. You will also win an additional $3,000 for a charity that works to end hunger. Go to . Deadline is February 29, 2008.
Paramount Tall Club of Chicago Scholarship – is $750 (and a possible extra $1,000) for females who are at least 5’10” tall and males who are at least 6’2” tall. They look at your grades, school activities, volunteer work, and personal achievement. Go to . Deadline is March 1, 2008.
U.S. Bank Scholarships are $1,000 for U.S. citizens or permanent residents with good grades and school/community activities. Apply online, at usbank/scholarship. Winners are selected at random. Deadline is February 29, 2008.
Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, Illinois – for the College of Engineering & Engineering Technology Scholarships you must be African American, Asian, Hispanic, Native American or female; you must be a U.S. citizen or alien resident. You must have a minimum 3.25 GPA. The Leadership Tuition Program for Women and Minorities award is $20,000. The Dean’s Diversity Scholarship is $1,500. Phi Kappa Omega Scholarship/Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Scholarship – is $1,000 for African-American seniors with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Student must attend full-time at a 4-year college. For details, go to postsecondary.cps.k12.il.us/scholarships. Deadline is February 29, 2008.
Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors – Illinois State University will have a FREE 6-day Actuarial Academy during the summer, for African-American, Hispanic-American and Native-American students who excel in mathematics. This program will help you decide if an actuarial career is for you; you will learn what actuaries do, where they work, and how you can become an actuary. You will be charged $25 to apply, but this money will be returned to you at the end of the program, together with an additional $150. You will also get free meals, free room and board, and free field trips. Go to for an application. They also have a program for the general population of students at Redbird Risk Management Challenge at . You will also be eligible for a $300 scholarship if you decide to major in actuarial science in any college, or $600 if you major in actuarial science at Illinois State.
William A. Lee Scholarship is $1,500 if you are the child of a member of a Chicago Federation of Labor union. Go to for details. One competition is academic where they ask for a transcript and ACT scores; one competition is a random drawing, where you only have to submit the application. Both competitions need proof of union membership. Received deadline is March 1, 2008.
Lillian E. Glover Scholarships (Illinois PTA) are $500 to $1,000 for seniors in the top 25% of the class. You must have the goal of entering the field of education. Deadline is March 1, 2008.
Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans, Women’s Division Scholarship is $2,000 for female students with at least one parent of Italian heritage who have a minimum GPA of 3.75. Deadline is March 1, 2008.
Tzu Chi Scholarship is $1,000 for academic achievement, community involvement and financial need. You must have a minimum 3.0 GPA (unweighted). Go to . Deadline is March 1, 2008.
Beyond Barriers is a seminar by the Illinois Association of Blind Students and NFBI on April 18 and 19, at Urbana, Illinois. It gives legally blind students a chance to learn coping strategies and helps them share experiences with other blind students and adults in different careers. Chicago Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) scholarships are $1,000 to $2,000 for academic achievement, school/community service/activities, and financial need. You must be (or must become) a member of Chicago JACL (a national civil rights/education organization that protects the human rights of Japanese, and all Americans while preserving the culture and values of the Japanese American community). • Illinois AMVETS Service Foundation Scholarship is $3,000.
• Illinois AMVETS Sad Sacks Nursing Scholarship is for a student who has been accepted into a pre-approved nursing program. A copy of the acceptance letter must be included with the application.
• Illinois AMVETS Junior ROTC Scholarship is $3,000 for students who participate in the Junior ROTC program.
• Illinois AMVETS Trade School Scholarship is $3,000 for students who have been accepted in a trade school. A copy of the acceptance letter must be included with the application.
• Illinois AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary Memorial Scholarship is $500 for children or grandchildren of a U.S. Veteran who served after September 15, 1940, and was Honorably Discharged or who is presently serving in the military.
• Illinois AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary Worchid Scholarship is $500 for children of a deceased father or mother who was a U.S. veteran who served after September 15, 1940 and was Honorably Discharged. They need not be killed in action or died as a result of a service-connected disability.
Purdue University (Calumet), Hammond, Indiana - Chancellor’s Scholar Award is for Valedictorians (#1 student) or Salutatorians (#2 student). Juniors. College Bound Scholarship (from Scholarship Chicago) is $1,250 to $5,000 for 11th graders with strong character, academic ambition, determined to succeed, with financial need. When you become a senior in high school, they will provide you with college/career preparation programs and paid summer internships. They will help you earn your degrees. Go to for the application. Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year (SAMMY) Award offers $7,500 for outstanding senior athletes. You will also be invited to attend a weekend at Disney World, in Florida, and be pictured in a magazine ad for “Got Milk”. You have to be nominated by a teacher, coach, athletic director, principal, parent, or relative. Or, you can nominate yourself! Phi Beta Kappa Association – offers $5,000 to an outstanding senior; you must have a minimum ACT of 27 and plan to attend a 4-year college with a liberal arts program. Deadline is March 3, 2008.
Juniors. The Executive Women International Scholarship is $3,000 for 11th graders who plan to pursue a business or professional career. One Schurz student can be nominated. Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards is $8,000 and a new laptop for seniors of Hispanic heritage with a minimum 3.0 GPA. HP Scholars Program Scholarship awards $40,000 (a 4-year $12,000 scholarship, Hewlett Packard Scholar Productivity Package and a paid summer internship) to African American, Latino or American Indian students who are enrolling into the University of California, Los Angeles-UCLA, North Carolina A&T State University, San Jose State University, Morgan State University or University of Washington. Juniors - University of Illinois at Chicago – College of Medicine – Medicina Scholars Program – is for current 11th graders of Hispanic/Latino heritage; you must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident; you must be able to speak conversational Spanish; minimum ACT of 21; have the interest/drive to become a physician. Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago Educational Foundation Scholarship is at least $3,000 for seniors in the top 25% of the class, who are planning to enroll in a science or engineering program at a college/university, leading to a bachelor’s degree in pre-law, physics, chemistry, biology, computer science or electrical, chemical, mechanical or nuclear engineering. Juniors and Seniors – The National Federation of the Blind Summer Internship program offers legally blind students work experience for 4 to 6 weeks in the field of their choice. (this is also for students who are already in college) You can either find your own job placement (and NFBI will pay you while you work at that job), or you can apply to NFBI and ask them for job ideas. This program helps legally blind students get past the “you have little or no experience” obstacle, and therefore helps you get a more permanent job in the future. In addition to giving you the job experience you need, you will have a great addition to your resume. NFBI will pay you up to 40 hours per week for 6 weeks. For an application go to . Illinois Lumber and Material Dealers Association offers from $500 to $2,000 to help students continue their interest in the lumber and building materials field as a career. Adrienne J. Whitney Scholarship – $500 for African-American students who plan to attend Northern Illinois University (DeKalb, Illinois) full time. You must be a citizen, with a GPA of at least 2.5, an ACT of at least 16, and/or rank in the top 20% of your class. You MUST apply to Northern Illinois University first, and then you will be considered for this scholarship. Deadline is April 1, 2008.
Park National Bank is offering $14,000 for students with a minimum 3.5 GPA, who are U.S. citizens and residents of Illinois, with good grades, whose family income is less than $69,700. Postmark Deadline is April 1, 2008.
