Welcome to Advanced Creative Writing, a course for students who are thinking about a writing career. The aim of this class is to create publishable, quality prose and poetry; create a portfolio of a student’s most outstanding examples of each of the following: poetry, a short story, creative non-fiction, and a literary interview; along with critiquing the work of others (both as a function of revision and consideration for publication); submit prose and/or poetry to literary competitions; and publish a literary publication twice during the semester. Behavior Expectations
Because Advanced Creative Writing is dedicated to publishing the high school’s literary journal, students will be held to the highest standards. Publishing The Valkyrie will involve real world deadlines and financial responsibilities; failure to attend class, come to class prepared, and be ready to participate will not only place more work on the other members of the class, but will be dealt with swiftly. Also, because the nature of this class and the high expectations, I expect there to be few (if any) problems.
Plagiarism
Plagiarism occurs when you knowingly or unknowingly represent the works of a published author or another student as your own. Plagiarism is morally and legally wrong, and will not be tolerated in this classroom. Work containing wording or ideas stolen from published writers or the writing of classmates will result in a zero grade on the assignment, and (upon a second offence) a failing grade in the class.
Student Authored Rules
As a class, we will come up with 5 rules that characterize our expectations of one another. Once we decide on these 5 rules, we will hold each other accountable for meeting our collective class expectations.
