| | |Description: |

| | |“When a student first logs on to ALEKS, a brief tutorial shows him how |

| | |to use these ALEKS answer input tools. The student then begins the |

| | |ALEKS Assessment. In a short period of time (about 45 minutes for most |

| | |courses), ALEKS assesses the student's current course knowledge by |

| | |asking him a small number of questions (usually 20-30).” |

| | |“To ensure that topics learned are retained in long term memory, ALEKS |

| | |periodically reassesses the student, using the results to adjust the |

| | |student's knowledge of the course. Because students are forced to show |

| | |mastery through mixed question assessments that cannot be predicted, |

| | |mastery of the ALEKS course means true mastery of the course.” |

| | | |

|Course Objectives |Students are expected to have a clear understanding of the ideas of Precalculus as a solid |

|(Learning Outcomes): |foundation for subsequent courses in mathematics and other disciplines as well as for direct|

| |application to real life situations. |

| |The content of the entire course covers topics from basic mathematics and develop them using|

| |practical and theoretical tools, building applications and making a strong support for |

| |Calculus classes. |

| |A student passing MATH1508 Precalculus course will be able to work with the concepts of |

| |functions (functions in general, exponential and logarithmic functions, polynomial and |

| |rational functions, trigonometric functions, etc), to solve a system of linear and |

| |non-linear equations and inequalities, to make basic operations with matrices, to apply |

| |mathematical induction method, to work with trigonometric functions and their properties, |

| |and to apply in problems related to other branches of Science: Calculus, Algebra, Physics, |

| |Chemistry, Biology, Pharmacy, Engineering,  Statistics, etc. |

|Course Activities/Assignments: |You will find all work on . When you log onto ALEKS you will go through|

| |a tutorial, then you will begin an Initial Assessment. |

| |[pic] |

| |You must complete your Initial Assessment by January 31 at midnight. Failure to complete the|

| |initial assessment will lead to being dropped from this course. If you are dropped you may |

| |lose your financial aid, so please complete your initial assessment. |

| |Paper Notebook: You must keep a notebook of everything you do on ALEKS. Every problem, |

| |every definition, all notes must be entered into your “hand written” notebook. There will |

| |be three intermediate objectives, Algebra Review, Prep for Midterm and Trigonometry with |

| |Matrices. Each intermediate objective will have a due date. |

|Assessment of Course Objectives: |You will have a Midterm on March 10, over Functions and Graphs, Polynomial and Rational |

| |Functions and Exponential Functions. The Midterm will appear on ALEKS Saturday, March 9 at |

| |12:01AM and close on Sunday, March 10 at 11:59PM. You may take the Midterm early if your |

| |fill these portions of your pie. You must contact me if you want to take the midterm early.|

| |The Final exam will be available on Tuesday, May 14 at 1:00AM and close on Wednesday, May 15|

| |at 11:59PM. |

|Grading Policy: |Your grade for this course will be calculated as the sum of the following percentages: |

| |5% of your percentage completed on Algebra Review. |

| |15% of your percentage completed on Prep for Midterm. |

| |30% - Midterm Exam: If a student has not completed the learning mode for the midterm they |

| |may take a second midterm when they meet these requirements. |

| |15% of your percentage completed on Trigonometry with Matrices. |

| |35% - The Final Exam |

| |The Drop Date for this semester is April 5, 2013. |

|Make-up Policy: |No makeup exams will be allowed except with proper documentation, i.e. doctor’s note, |

| |hospital’s note, or UTEP excused absence document. |

|Attendance Policy: |Students must work on ALEKs a minimum of 8 hours per week. Failure to work on ALEKs 8 hours|

| |per week may result in being dropped from the course. Students are encouraged to complete |

| |25 topics per week in order to complete this course successfully. |

|Academic Integrity Policy: |Cheating on a Test or Quiz must be dealt with in accordance with University regulations. |

| |Students must work on ALEKS a minimum of 8 hours per week. If you do not maintain 8 hours |

| |per week you may be dropped from this course. |

| |The Algebra Review must be completed by midnight February 4. You must fill in all topics up|

| |to the dotted white lines shown in the figure to the left. Your grade for the Algebra |
