North Marion High School Writes. You’ve just been assigned a weekly journal assignment that covers a current events Crime Related News Article. This article should be about a crime committed in the United States. It can be from a newspaper, magazine, or Web stories article. Here are some tips to help you write a good one.

Each week, you will be required to have ONE Crime Related News Article to present in class, with class discussions to follow. A minimum of 4 articles will be required for your crime scene binder each month. It can be from a newspaper, magazine, or Web stories article. The journal must be TWO paragraphs that includes a minimum of FIVE sentences each.

Here are some tips to help you write a good one:

Cite and Print out the article for source verification.

Accuracy. Your writing might be wonderful, but if you don’t get the facts right, people won’t believe what you write the next time. Make sure everything you say is true. And spell people’s names correctly.

What makes a good story? Anything that could interest or affect your classmates, teachers, school or family will make a good story.

Example: Criminal Justice topics like school shootings and how to prevent them … Bullying, why does it take place, the importance of awareness and prevention…Be curious. Ask yourself, “What Criminal Justice topic would I like to know more about?” Then write a story about it.

Writing the story. Start with a good lead sentence. A sentence that grabs your reader and makes them want to read more.

Who – What – When – Where – Why – How. Almost all newspaper, magazine, or Web stories start off by answering most of these questions. Try to answer these questions in your story.

Example:

More than $2,000 worth of tools were reported stolen Sunday morning from a home that is being renovated.

Lawn equipment and tools valued at about $2,000 were reported stolen from a home that was being renovated. A worker said he left his tools in a shed and camper at the home on Sunday. A woman said she noticed the break in at approximately 2:30 p.m. The property was located in the 3000 block of Northwest 60th Street, according to Marion County Sheriff’s Office reports. Several leaf blowers, hedge cutters, a chainsaw, and a toolbox filled with miscellaneous tools were among the items taken, reports state. There were no signs of forced entry. Anyone with information can call the Sheriff’s Office at (352) 732-9111 or Crime Stoppers at 368-STOP.

Writing about your thoughts.

Example:

The article on tools being reported stolen shows how thieves can burglarize property without being heard during broad daylight. This crime was committed at 1430 hours. I think the owner should have had an alarm installed for the value of the tools. If it was my property, I would you have installed an alarm. The house according to google maps is in a wooded area with no homes close by. I conclude that the thief knew that no one was home and no one would hear him. This particular area allowed the perpetrators to take the tools. I believe this could have been a random burglary or maybe the thief knew the owner.
