We are thrilled to welcome all new and returning students, virtually, on August 17th. If you have not yet, please take a minute to read through this update from CSD. We currently have 211 students enrolled for this school year, and we are excited for the learning and growth they will experience. The faculty and staff at Clairemont share a strong commitment to maintaining a challenging, nonjudgmental, cooperative, and friendly school environment, believing that it is in this type of environment that children learn best. Instructionally, Clairemont focuses on a national school design called EL Education, which is a hands-on, project-based, approach to learning. Teachers lead students to be responsible for their own learning in a hands-on experiential manner. We will do our best to translate this focus into our virtual environments. We appreciate your support and grace as we all embark on navigating the beginning of the school year in this way. Throughout this document, you will find several important links. Please read the information carefully as it contains important information about our school and district. If you have any questions not answered by these documents, please feel free to email me at carmour@.Yours in service,Curtis Armour, Jr.Dr. Curtis Armour, Jr.,, PrincipalClairemont Elementary SchoolBack to School InformationVirtual Learning SchedulesThis week, CSD communicated specific information regarding virtual learning such as schedules, a readiness form for families to complete, and other information such as dates for the upcoming town hall meetings, release of teacher assignments, etc. Please make sure you have read over this information linked here.We realize and understand the challenges/concerns virtual learning might pose for families. When looking at the schedule, please know that more specific schedule information will be shared by your child’s teacher. At first glance, the schedule might appear to be a large amount of screen time for students. Teachers are receiving specific training on student engagement in the virtual world, dissolving the screen and much more to enhance the virtual learning experience for students. For example, you can expect your child to have the opportunity to engage in live instruction daily through whole class crew meetings and closing circles. Content instruction will be structured so that students are given the opportunity for small group live instruction a few times each week, and work offline on tasks related to their learning. In addition, live sessions will be recorded if students are unable to log on during their assigned time. When students are not engaging in live instruction, they will be working independently. Live instruction sessions will provide teachers the time to offer more differentiated support and feedback to students. We feel these sessions are valuable and important for continuing academic and social/emotional growth. However, we understand that family circumstances might prevent students from logging on. Therefore, student attendance will be based on their participation in various learning activities, not solely on participation in live sessions.Virtual Learning Town Hall:CSD will host virtual town hall meetings to discuss virtual learning Pre-K through 12th grade, special programs and student supports, technology, and Wellness Wednesday. The PreK-2nd grade Town Hall will be held on August 3rd, 5:00-6:00 pm. All meetings will be conducted in the webinar format through Zoom and will be limited to 500 people. The link to each meeting can be found here. You can submit questions ahead of time or during each town hall via this form. We ask that you submit questions before the meetings to give us the ability to answer as many questions as possible during the presentation. All town halls will be recorded and available on opening2020.Meet and Greet and Classroom Assignments:Due to Covid-19 and social distancing, “Meet and Greet” will be held virtually during the week of August 10th. Your child’s teacher will be reaching out to schedule times to meet virtually with them. On August 5th, you will be able to log into the parent portal to view your child’s classroom assignment. See below for parent portal information.School Tours:Due to Covid-19 and social distancing, school tours are not being held at this time. School Supplies:School supply list is linked here for all grade levels. School supplies are suggestions of tools that could be used at home and/or when we return to school. If you ordered school supplies through the school, you may pick them up from the school on August 13. We will communicate further details closer to that date.Materials Pickup:Thursday, Aug. 13th has been designated as materials pickup day. All parents should plan to drive up to school to retrieve items students will need for Virtual Learning. This includes: instructional materials such as Fundations materials for literacy, math manipulatives, etc. We will communicate further details closer to that munication:The Clairemont website is a great source of information that’s regularly updated. The parent portal allows parents to view their child’s attendance records, assessment records, lunch balance, and an online lunch payment option. We utilize “The First Six Weeks” to emphasize community and our Crew agreements. As students are learning routines, they will begin lightly learning new content. We also spend the first few weeks assessing to learn where our students are academically. Students will learn what it means to be “crew” with this year’s classmates/teacher. This year the time will be spent teaching students how to be successful in Virtual Learning in order to foster as much independence as possible. We also focus on Social/Emotional health by holding daily crew meetings. On Wednesdays students will have an opportunity to take a break from content lessons and participate in lessons from our new SEE Learning curriculum (Social Emotional and Ethical lessons). In CSD, we are prioritizing the wellness of our community.New Kindergarten students:We have created a presentation for new Kindergarten students and parents, “Virtual Kindergarten 101.” This presentation will share information about the first 6 weeks, classroom agreements, EL Education, curriculum, and more!
