Biology 614-Contemporary Topics in Human Genetics

Course Description

BIO 614 examines current topics in the field of human and medical genetics. Topics and activities change from each offering due to the rapid advances in the field of genetics. Instruction by genetics professionals will provide accurate interpretation of these topics and serve to clarify much of the public media's information.

The course requires the completion of online didactic instruction and a concluding interactive two-day laboratory workshop on the GGC campus in Greenwood. Teachers can choose to attend the June 25-26 or June 28-29 workshop.

Course materials will be available via Lander University's Blackboard. Participants are responsible for accessing the material and meeting all assignment deadlines.

Biology 614 carries three graduate credit hours that may be applied to teacher re-certification and graduate degree programs.

Course Requirements

Bio 612 is a graded, graduate level course requiring:

? Viewing of all online lectures ? Completion of all online quizzes and assessments ? Completion of assigned readings ? Participation in group discussions ? Attendance at one of the hands-on workshops to be

held at GGC's Genetic Education Center

Selected Topics

? Building block of genetics and molecular medicine ? Modern genetic testing: arrays, sequencing,

proteomics, and metabolomics ? Bioinformatics and application to medicine ? CRISPR technology ? Ethical concerns

Workshops

To receive course credit, participants must complete a two day interactive workshop. Workshops will be held at the Greenwood Genetic Center's Genetic Education Center

Workshop dates will be June 25-26 and June 28-29, 2018

Course Objectives

? To increase understanding of the role genetics plays in society and health.

? To provide accurate analyses of current and sometimes controversial topis in genetics.

? To examine the role of genetic variation in human disease.

? To provide new activities for classroom incorporation. ? To allow opportunities to discuss the ethical and social

implications of genetics in decision making. ? To emphasize the relevance and application of genetics

and genetics activities in the classroom. ? To provide science instruction in genetics that support

the SC Science Standards. ? To expose teachers to current topics and technologies

to facilitate classroom learning and laboratory opportunities.

Registration

Registrations are invited from instructors at the high school and undergraduate levels. The level of instruction assumes the applicants have some biology and human genetics training. The graduate course credit will be given through the Lander University Department of Biological Sciences.

Cost

The course fee of $200 is due with the registration form. This fee covers all course and workshop materials. South Carolina teachers receive three graduate credit hours through Lander University's Department of Biological Sciences. The registration deadline is April 18, 2018.
