A Word From The Principal...

Some Important Dates

Welcome back! I hope your child is well rested and eager to return to school. I want to thank all our parents who took time from their busy schedules to visit with their child's teacher during conference time. During Fall Intersession, CUSD upgraded the district as well all of the school web sites to "SchoolWires-- Centricity2." I encourage all of our parents to register on the RGB's web site at http:// c2.chandlerschools.site/Default.aspx? PageType=10&SiteID=796. "E-alerts" can be sent directly to your phone or email. Also, don't forget to sign-up for access to "Gradespeed" to check your child's progress. You can do that at http:// chandler.pc/. You will need your child's ID # (contact your child's teacher, if you do not know it). If you have some free time, please feel free to stop by and check out our 4th Annual Book Parade next Friday. The parade starts at 9am.

Healthy Fruit/Vegetable Snacks

Spanish Immersion Day at CHS

Bologna Elementary is now taking part in Chandler Unified School District's "Fresh Fruit & Veggie program," which will be sending a fresh fruit or veggie snack to all students on Mon-Wed-Fri. Cafeteria staff will be dropping off enough snacks for every student in each class. Since the program has been in place, your child(ren) have received grapes, apple slices, pineapple, kiwi fruit, tangelos, safe and healthy cantaloupe chunks, Asian pears, Teardrop tomatoes. This Friday, October 21st, students will receive "Black Sphinx Dates." The CUSD Nutrition Department wrote a grant that will supply healthy snacks to all the students at RGB this year (and for future year). A big thanks goes to our Mrs. Crane, our caf? manager for providing apples in the breezeway during parent-teacher conferences.

News from the PE Department

Hopefully everyone saw the running club and KID ROCK STARS papers come home in mid September. Kohl's Department Store and the Phoenix Children's Hospital are supporting our running club by offering prizes for runners who participate in running club and are active at home. Everyone who signed up by September 22nd received a paper about being active at home and recording the activity to turn in for prizes. We encourage families to be active together!

Running club starts Monday November 7th. Students may still join running club, but it is too late to sign up to receive prizes. Running club will be after school on Mondays and Thursdays from 3:10-3:50 with the running club store from 3:50-4:00. Please pick up your runners by 4:00.

As it cools down, we will be enjoying outdoors sports in PE to include soccer, football and cross country running. Students may want to bring water bottles to PE and should always wear tennis shoes and comfortable clothing.

Our RGB "Sunshine Solvers" starts Monday, October 24, 8:00 - 8:30 in the computer lab (MT-W-Th) The after school "Speed Reading" program will also start the same day! Students participating in this program will meet in the computer lab (M-T-Th).

Chandler High School's Spanish Honor Society will be hosting a Spanish Immersion Day for elementary students on Saturday, November 19. What a great opportunity to play, sing, dance, create and learn ... all in Spanish! Mark your calendar! More info will be forthcoming in our November newsletter.

News from the Media Center

Battle of the Books meets this Thursday, October 20th to review Sarah, Plain, and Tall. Our first official Battle 1 will be held after school Monday, October 24th and will cover all 4 books from 1st quarter. Great job teams!

Congratulations to our first 3 Millionaire's: William Dunning, Marc Burgueno, and Desiree Hernandez! The first 20 kids to read one millionaire words will enjoy a limousine ride and pizza lunch with Mrs. Abrahams. Remaining students who reach one million by the end of the school year will have a pizza lunch.

The end of the year will be here in no time at all. If you are considering making a donation, Chandler Unified School District will only allow a minimum of $25.00 for a Tax donation, and up to $400.00 per couple and $200.00 per individual. Parents are encouraged to make their donations online! It is more secure than sending in a form with their credit card number! If you do decide to help RGB with a "Tax Credit" donation, you can get a donation form from your child's teacher. Checks and forms will be forwarded to the CUSD District Office as soon as they are received. All checks must have a phone number on them. Remember, all funds will be returned to you when you file your 2011 taxes. For those of you that have already participated in the "Arizona Tax Credit" program, we appreciate your support!

How Families Can Help Their Children Become Better Readers

We will present an article each month on what strategies you can use at home to help your child become a better reader.

Let's begin by understanding the definition of some of the terms we often hear when discussing reading: Reading Fluency ? The ability to read a text with automaticity, accuracy, and expression to support comprehension. When children read word by word (without fluency) they tend to focus on how each word sounds rather then on what the whole text means. Ask your child to read out loud to you. Do they read smoothly and with expression, indicating they understand what they read?

Reading Comprehension ? The capacity to perceive and understand the meanings communicated by texts. Does your

child understand what he/she just read? Good readers consciously use comprehension strategies to make sense of what they have read. Phonemic Awareness ? The knowledge of the individual speech sounds in spoken words and the ability to manipulate those sounds. In English, 44 sounds are used to form about 1 million words. Children need to recognize these sounds so they can put them together into words as they read. Print Concepts ? The organization of our written language as students learn to access print in the early stages of reading development. Demonstrating correct directional behavior, from opening a book to following the text, recognizing distinguishing features of a sentence, such as end punctuation and alphabetizing a list of words.

We will explore these terms and ways to help your child read in the upcoming newsletters. Also, please be sure to read the Parent Liaison Newsletter which will also give ways in which you can assist your child at home. Below are a few reading websites that may be of interest to you and your child:

? Teaches children to read with phonics. Oxford ? Great reading support for children through the age of 11

menus/trophies.html ? Reading textbooks used at Bologna kids - Great resource! Check out Tumblebooks (stories read aloud by famous people!).
