Meeting Notes

April 10, 2009

Present: Martha Aaron, Jose Anaya, Maryann Cohan, Darling Garcia, LauraLee Garinger, Maricela Vital

A scheduled meeting of the Community Advancement Division Council convened at 10:00 a.m. in the Business Training Center, Room 21.

Review of Minutes from March 9, 2009 meeting

Minutes approved as written.

Department Updates

o Workplace Learning Resource Center – Maryann Cohan:

Prisons

1) Mock Job Fair will be held May 13th. Practice interviews for participants will take place April 20th through May 7th. Looking for businesses to participate.

2) AutoCAD contract has been approved. The class begins April 14th.

3) Parenting and Welding classes are still on hold.

4) Parenting classes continuing at the detention center.

Computer Lab

1) A new partnership with Los Angeles Urban League has developed and they are sending students for computer training. The agreement has a 20% retention of the payment to us until the student finds employment. Help in notifying the Computer Lab of any job leads is important.

2) One Stops sending laid off workers for training. A new program with Foster Care children will have classes on Saturdays.

Maritime Training Classes

1) The next Standard for Training Certification and Watch keeping (STCW) class will take place on April 21st and is full. There is a waiting list. The next class is scheduled for May 19th. The Lifeboat class is scheduled for May 12th. There has been an increase in students this month due to workers being laid off. The maritime program will participate at the Career Expo at El Camino College on April 22nd.

Solar Training

1) The training room is being refreshed to accommodate future Solar Power Training.

o Center for Applied Competitive Technologies – Darling Garcia:

1) Received $500,000 grant from Chancellor’s Office. $400,000 to continue Robotics and Engineering training for high and middle school students. $100,000 for cooperative grant for middle schools.

2) HUB grant from CCCO for $120,000 to benefit CACTs statewide by developing more partnerships with industry.

3) Fastener Program’s second graduation will take place on April 10th.

4) Grant to Department of Labor to develop leadership curriculum for the Fastener Program to apply for short term training and moving to academic side (Compton).

o Center for International Trade Development – Darling Garcia:

1) Intern from Belgium, Marika, will be here for six months. She is helping with the Best Market Reports. Bronwen is working on reports for the CITD. Grant renewal is taking place and quarterly reports are due. Writing IDRC for more trade and export compliance.

2) Preparing for upcoming conferences: Export/Import Bank Annual Conference in Washington, DC; CALED/CCCEWD Joint 2009 Annual Conference April 15-16 in Monterey, CA; NASBITE International 22nd Annual Conference April 19th – 22nd in San Diego, CA.

3) Jim Hoffman is writing a proposal for a grant to export “green” technology education to China.

4) During World Trade Week, will create awareness of careers in the international field aimed at high school students.

5) Successfully completed the second Customs Brokers Training and Licensing preparation course with 36 students.

o Small Business Development Center – LauraLee Garinger:

1) Star Van Buren will be attending a mandatory California Small Business Development Center Conference April 13 and 14 prior to attending the CALED & CCCEWD Joint Conference April 15-17 in Monterey, CA.

2) NxLevel classes are booked to capacity. They are scheduled from April 6th to June 11. The end product is a business plan for each participant. QuickBooks classes are in progress. There are four beginning classes and two advanced classes.

o Contract Education & Community Education – Maricela Vital:

Cristallea Byun will be attending the CALED and CCCEWD Joint 2009 Annual

Conference on April 15-16 in Monterey, CA.

Employee Training Panel (ETP)

Four companies are in progress with training. Nine companies will be starting training soon. Economy is affecting the number of classes. Toyota is close to signing their contract.

Contract Education

1) City of Redondo Beach’s Customer Service training continues through 07/30/09.

2) City of Torrance’s contract for Customer Service Training has gone forward.

3) Providing Customer Service training to two cohorts of youth starting April 15th.

Discussion

o Security: When leaving after 5:00 p.m., make sure that outside doors are locked. Always be on the look-out for anything suspicious and report it to a manager.

o Student Learning Outcomes and Program Review: SLOs are part of the accreditation process. Funded centers do not have to do them. Inglewood Center, Foster Care, Community Education and the El Camino Language Academy will need to do them. Program reviews will be completed by June 30th.

o Director Job Postings: The Director positions for the Center for Applied Competitive Technologies, Contract and Community Education and the Workplace Learning Resource Center have been posted on-line.

o Workforce Investment Board (WIB) Opportunities: A lot of opportunities will become available due to the stimulus money for training the unemployed.
