| |Glue sticks |

| |Orange, brown and yellow paper (for the face, ears, whiskers and mane) |

| |Lesson Introduction: (whole class focus) |

| |The class will gather on the floor in front of the teacher, while he/she reads the book, Pop Up Jungle. This will lead into discussion about |

| |animals that live in the jungle. |

| |The teacher will inform the students that today’s lesson will be focusing on the jungle animal, the lion. |

| |(10 mins) |

| |Main Component of Lesson: |

| |The teacher will show students photos of real lions and the class will have a discussion about lions. |

| |The teacher will show the students the materials that will be used to create the lion mask. He/she will ask the students which materials would be |

| |suitable for which part of the lion (eg. paper plate for the face shape, orange paper for the mane). |

| |The teacher will demonstrate how to cut and construct the lion mask. |

| |Students begin creating their lion masks. |

| |*students may need assistance in cutting the eye holes and attaching an icy pole stick for the handle. |

| |Lesson Conclusion: |

| |Students pack up their workspace and return unused materials. Students to leave masks at table to dry (names on the back) |

| |The class will have a few minutes to walk around and few their peers lion mask creations. |

| |This lesson will incorporate both music and drama elements, with the students learning how to sing elements of the song “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.” |

| |They will also learn how to play bongo drums. The drama element involves the students performing a dance with their lion masks. |

| |Lesson Introduction: |

| |The warm up will involve the students standing in a circle and copying the yoga animal moves that the teacher performs (eg. flamingo pose, giraffe |

| |stretch) |

| |Main Component of Lesson: |

| |The teacher will play the song “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” and the students will learn the chorus line. This will be practiced a few times. |

| |The students will be introduced to bongo drums. They will learn how to play them, to match the beat of the music. |

| |The last section of this lesson will involve the students moving and dancing like lions (with their lion masks) |

| |The teacher will split the class into two groups, both groups getting the chance to be the music performers; singing and playing the bongo drums |

| |while the other half of the class does the dance and lion movements. |

| |The lesson will conclude with the students having a class discussion about what aspects of the performance went well and which areas they think |

| |they should work harder on for the following lesson. |

| |The focus of this drama lesson will be on performance. Students have previously learnt the song and dance. This lesson will involve the students |

| |practising for an end of lesson performance, which will be filmed on ipads and put onto DVDs for parents. |

| |The main component of the lesson will involve the students practising their performance- the two groups of students will both get the chance to |

| |practice their music part and then their lion dance part. (15 mins) |

| |The second half of this lesson will involve the students performing to other Grade Prep students (who will come into the classroom to be the |

| |audience). Students will get to perform twice- performing the bongo drum music and singing for the first group of students who will perform the |

| |lion movements and dance (the groups will swap over, getting to perform both music and drama aspects). |

| |The lesson will conclude with the teacher showing the class the video of the students performing. |
