AQW Pest Report No. 31-2021

Weekly AQW Report: For the week of July 29 to August 04, 2021

Attached is the report for all A, Q, and W pests intercepted or detected in California from

July 29 to August 04, 2021. Pests were identified by the California Department of Food

and Agriculture¡¯s Plant Pest Diagnostics (PPD) Laboratory.

Gypsy Moth Intercepted by Alameda County

PDR: 010P06809961

On July 23, 2021, Alameda County Inspector Sean Eckert conducted an inspection of

outdoor household goods and children toys of a recently moved family from Red Hook,

New York. The box of outdoor household goods was delivered to the homeowner by a

private company (PMKC Transport).

During the inspection of all outdoor household items/goods, Inspector Eckert found

suspect pests inside a children¡¯s outdoor Tonka truck/tractor. A pest sample was collected

and submitted to the PPD Entomology Laboratory where it was identified as A-rated

Lymantria dispar (gypsy moth). An egg mass and pupa were also collected but laboratory

results identified them as C-rated pests.

A Notice of Rejection was issued due to the violation of California Food and Agricultural

Code (FAC) Section 6461.5 (live pests) and California FAC Section 5306 (violation of a

quarantine) for violating Federal Domestic Quarantine Gypsy Moth Section 301.45.

The shipment was reconditioned and released to homeowner along with the placement

of a gypsy moth trap on the property. The trap will remain on the property for three years

with continued monitoring by Alameda County¡¯s Pest Detection Team.

Cherry Fruit Fly Larva Interception

PDR: HB0P50000995

On July 14, 2021, Inspector Aiden Ward of the Hornbook Border Protection Station,

inspected a vehicle from Albany, Oregon. During the inspection, Inspector Ward

intercepted 3 lbs. of Prunus avium (sweet cherry) fruit.

The fruit lacked proper certification for California entry requirements fulfilling State

Exterior Quarantine for cherry fruit fly. Upon inspecting the fruit, Inspector Ward noticed

that the cherries were heavily infested with live larvae.

Inspector Ward informed the travelers that the fruit violated California FAC Section 6461.5

(live pests) and State Exterior Quarantine Cherry Fruit Fly, California Code of Regulations

Section 3256. California FAC Section 5306 (violation of a quarantine) was also violated.

Consequently, Inspector Ward confiscated the fruit.

Pest samples were collected and sent to the PPD Entomology Laboratory where they

were identified as A-rated Rhagoletis indifferens (western cherry fruit fly). The cherries

were properly disposed of at the station.
