Small Group Study Guide “I Will Not Be Shaken”

Week 19 Psalm 62

Opening Question:

Describe your most memorable experience of “being shaken” by an earthquake.

Review the Message:

What were some of the key points that you took away from Sunday’s message?

Study Questions: Read Psalm 62

1. In Psalm 62 the author describes the role of stillness and silence in his having confidence in God.   What role do stillness and silence play in your own relationship with God?

2. Christian author Dallas Willard wrote, “Generally it is much more important to cultivate the quiet, inward space of constant listening than to always be approaching God for specific direction.” In what ways does this ring true for you? Describe the role of stillness in your own life with God.  How might you cultivate moments if not periods of stillness in which to engage God during each week or month?

3. In describing where he places his confidence, the Psalmist uses three concrete images for God that would have been well known to the people of Israel – rock, fortress, and refuge. What do these images mean to you?   With which of those images do you resonate the most?

4. Looking at his adversaries and difficulties (vs. 3,4) the Psalmist feels like a “tottering fence.”   When he turns his attention in stillness to God (vs. 1,2,5,6), he expresses his confidence in God saying “I will not be shaken.”   What is challenging or inspiring to you about this picture of the Psalmist honesty facing difficult realities and also experiencing God’s character in such a way that he is not shaken?

5. When you face challenges, what are the other places where you are tempted to place your confidence (see vs. 9,10)?

6. The Psalmist exhorts the people to “pour out your heart to God” in verse 8.   One Old Testament picture of this in the life of Hannah (1 Samuel 1), a barren mother misunderstood by her husband and her “pastor,” who accuses her of being drunk when she came to the temple to pray. In what ways do you feel attracted to the Psalmist’s invitation and Hannah’s example of “pouring out your heart to God?”   In what ways do you feel resistance to this?

7. Are there ways in which your life of faith would change if you more fully lived in the truth that   The Psalmist expresses the conviction that God is his salvation, a rock, a fortress, a refuge and full of power and steadfast love.   Would how you live your life of faith be different if you lived more deeply in these convictions.
