POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position: Director of Major Gifts and Marketing

Department: Office of Development and Stewardship

Reports To: Vice Chancellor/Executive Director of Development

Classification: Exempt

General Description

The Director of Major Gifts and Marketing will provide the leadership, strategic direction, management and coordination of the major donor program to meet the organization's major gifts fundraising goal and build the individual donor base.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities

The following specific responsibilities are representative of duties required in this position. They may be unilaterally but reasonably changed based on the working environment and departmental needs.

• Create and guide a comprehensive major and planned giving strategy and plan for the Archdiocese of Newark that will identify philanthropic opportunities.

• Establish short and long-range funding goals in consultation with management.

• Research, identify and maintain a portfolio of major gift prospects, as well as existing donors.

• Design and execute identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies.

• Will create a plan for each donor that will serve as a foundational communication and marketing plan for each person and will execute that plan so individuals are retained and upgraded.

• Will work with the program director and the Finance department to obtain appropriate project information, including budgets, and create offers, proposals and asks that will be used with persons to secure gifts.

• Prepare written materials, including correspondence, solicitation materials, acknowledgements and regular communications as part of the major donor program.

• Prepare marketing materials including brochures, articles, ads and other media announcements to promote the concept of major giving to the Archdiocese.

• Coordinate major donor receptions and recognition events.

• Ensure that all donors are appropriately thanked and receive regular communication.

• Provide detailed reports on major donor activity.

• Update the department’s various websites.

• Draft newsletters, acknowledgment and solicitation letters.

• Supervise the Assistant Operations Manager.

• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Skills

• Demonstrated record of successful major donor solicitations, including the design and execution of identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies.

• Strong interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.

• Good listening skills, self-motivation, problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently.

• Supervisory experience.

• Good computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft WORD and Excel as well as Raiser’s Edge.

• Ability to maintain a flexible work schedule, including some evenings and weekends.

• Practicing Catholic committed to advancing the mission of Christ’s Church.

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor’s degree and at least five years of high-level experience in major donor cultivation.
