Job Specification

Title: Development Officer

Hours: 35 Hours per week

Location: Edinburgh

Starting Salary: £24,903

Responsible to: The Director

Contract: Permanent

Annual Leave: up to 28 days per annum (dependent on length

of service) plus 12 public holidays

Pension: 5% employer contribution

Guiding Values and Principles

The SIAA expects all members of staff will hold central to their practice the ethos and principles of Independent Advocacy in all its diverse forms.

Job purpose

The post aims to promote, support and develop independent advocacy across Scotland. The post holder will;

a) Review, develop and deliver information about the SIAA, independent advocacy and issues relevant to advocacy organisations.

b) Help with the development of consultation responses, guidance and good practice documents.

c) The time of the post holder will be equally divided between information duties and development duties.

Main Responsibilities

The Post holder will take the lead in:

Information and Promotion

1. Serving as the key contact for enquiries about the purpose, activities and services of the SIAA and ensuring a prompt, effective response.

2. Maintenance of the SIAA website.

3. Production of the SIAA quarterly magazine, weekly e-bulletin and maintenance of the directory.

4. Continuing the SIAA’s engagement in the use of various social media; including but not exclusively Twitter, Facebook, blogs etc.

5. Establishing good working relationships with journalists, produce news releases, maintain media contacts and monitor the Scottish media regarding independent advocacy.

Work with other colleagues on:

6. Promoting the work of SIAA by representing the organisation at external meetings, events and conferences etc.

7. Developing and maintaining relevant contacts.

8. Developing, producing and reviewing information materials that are accurate and accessible.

9. Developing, producing and reviewing SIAA publications.

Central & Administrative Functions

10. Gathering and dissemination of information relevant to member organisations.

11. Gathering and dissemination of information about independent advocacy.

12. Help maintain the SIAA’s databases.

Membership Functions

13. Develop and maintain a resource of independent advocacy related materials.

14. Planning, design, monitoring and evaluation of SIAA members’ events, conferences, seminars and AGM.

Development Functions

15. Work closely with the Director and other colleagues to develop responses to consultations carried out by the Scottish Government, the Scottish Parliament and other relevant bodies.

16. Monitor publication of new consultations etc.

17. Work closely with the Director and other colleagues to complete different guidance and good practice documents being developed by the SIAA.

Information Functions

The post holder will where necessary assist in the:

18. Design and deliver information and promotional materials to help raise awareness/understanding about advocacy amongst other groups and organisations.

Overarching & Other Responsibilities

19. Work as part of a team within strategic and individual work plans.

20. Work according to the policies and procedures of the Scottish Independent Advocacy Alliance.

21. Take part in supervision, learning and appraisal activities.

22. Contribute to the strategic direction of SIAA through team meetings, working groups, monitoring and evaluation.

23. The post holder will be required to carry out any other duties to the equivalent level to ensure the smooth running of the organisation.

This job description forms part of your contractual agreement with SIAA. However it is a broad picture of the post at the date of employment and we recognise that posts change and evolve over time.
