UNIT DIRECTIONS: This is an independent or partner learning unit. We will not review the material as a class. You will choose TWO early American civilizations from chapters 11 & 12 of your textbook to focus your flipbook work on, but you will be tested on ALL of the information in both chapters.

Steps and CHECKLIST (check off each step as you complete it):

1. _______ Read & review the six themes of history in your textbook (pages XXXII-XXXV).

2. _______ Read & take notes on Chapter 11.1, using the notes page provided.

3. _______ Read the lessons in chapters 11 and 12 that cover the four civilizations: Olmec, Inca, Aztec, and Maya.

4. _______ Answer the review questions in this packet for each lesson. NOTE: You do NOT have to take reading notes on these lessons, however, you WILL be tested on the information!

5. _______ Decide which 2 civilizations you would like to focus on. Read the lessons that cover those civilizations and fill in the six themes of history chart for both.

6. _______ Create your flipbook with one page per each theme of history. Compare BOTH civilizations on each page.

a. Follow the directions for each panel; use the questions to stimulate your responses, but do not let them limit your answers. Your answers must be in complete sentences and detailed!

b. Use class time wisely when working on the project

c. All writing should be TYPED or in INK.

d. All symbols/icons should be COLORED.

7. _______ Take notes on other students’ flipbooks on the share day. You will take notes on all four civilizations (even the ones you did….everyone has multiple perspectives!). These notes will help you learn about the 2 civilizations that you did not choose for your own flipbook and study for the quiz.

III. Flipbook: You will create a 6-panel flipbook (12 pages TOTAL) that demonstrates your knowledge of Early American Civilizations.

• Each panel will represent one theme of history and will be divided onto 2 pages: one for your 1st civilization and one for your 2nd civilization. So you will discuss each theme of history TWICE.

• Panel EXAMPLE:

• You use of icons needs to be underlined in your explanations. Use a digital copy or illustrate each icon that you use.

Panel #1: Geography

• Include maps of the civilizations.

• Label physical features

• How did the societies produce wealth and organize labor?

• How did the societies act in order to gain control of more resources/goods?

• Include one of the following icons in addressing your findings: Trends or Contributions.

• Draw a colorful symbol or illustration for this theme.

Panel #3: Culture

• How did the peoples in these civilizations act, express themselves, and organize their society?

• How did they act toward societies different from their own?

• Think about the arts: music, dance, paintings, etc.

• Include one of the following icons in your responses: Ethics or Rules.

• Draw a colorful symbol or illustration for this theme.

Panel #4: Belief Systems

• Belief systems are often religious (belief in a god or gods). They may also be principles of right and wrong.

• Belief systems can be expressed in different ways, including celebrations and other rituals.

• Include two of the following icons in your response: Ethics, Big Idea, Origins.

• Draw a colorful symbol or illustration for this theme.

• What is the system of laws and authority that this civilization uses to guide and control its people?

• How are the laws enforced?

• How and why have any laws been changed?

• What discoveries, inventions, and improved methods of doing things were used in this civilization to improve the lives of people?

IV. Planning: Choose 2 civilizations that you would like to study for your flipbook. Using chapters 11 & 12 in your textbook, discuss how each civilization relates to the Themes of History. These notes will be your “rough draft” for your flipbook pages.
