Activity 1 #: Mickey Mouse Art

APA Citation of Source (where you got the idea from):

Ayer, M. (2017, April 21). Turn Your Disney Parks Map Into Art. Retrieved from

Intended Audience (this should be almost the same each time):

5 to 9 year olds

Brief Description (3-5 quality sentences):

The website provides a Mickey Mouse head template to print on printer paper or cardstock and cut out. Then the user cuts Disney maps into strips and glues them onto the Mickey Mouse shapes. Once trimmed and dried the Mickey Mouse heads can be framed or even used as bookmarks.

Application to Libraries or Classroom (3-5 quality sentences; why/how a library or teacher could use it or not):

This would be an excellent craft for a summer vacation themed program or right after a Disney themed storytime. There are only select settings that this specific craft could be used in but the idea can be adapted. For example, instead of a Mickey Mouse head a beach ball could be used for a beach themed program and magazines could be used for pictures.

Critique (7-10 quality sentences; any problems, areas for improvement, great parts, useful parts):

This was a very fun project. I used past Disney vacation pictures on mine to add a bit of a personal touch. This is an easy project for children ages 5 to 9 and can prolong their enjoyment of a good Disney vacation. All that is required is a printer, scissors, and glue. The smaller Mickey Mouse heads were a bit difficult but there was a wide variety of sizes available on the print out. For younger children the strips can be precut to making things easier and safer and they can use the larger Mickey heads. Overall, this was a fun and simple craft.

Activity 2 #: Belles Enchanted Paper Rose

APA Citation of Source (where you got the idea from):

Belles Enchanted Paper Rose. (2017, February). Retrieved from

Intended Audience (this should be almost the same each time):

  5 to 9 year olds

Brief Description (3-5 quality sentences):

This craft was all about making the Beast’s cursed rose. All that was needed was construction paper, pipe cleaners, tape, and glue. There was an added option to suspend the rose from a glass container using clear wire as well.

Application to Libraries or Classroom (3-5 quality sentences; why/how a library or teacher could use it or not):

This would be an excellent craft not only for Disney themed storytimes but also spring events and Mother’s Day. This is a very cost effective craft, using common crafting supplies. A rose craft can be used for a wide variety of themed events and storytimes.

Critique (7-10 quality sentences; any problems, areas for improvement, great parts, useful parts):

This craft looked incredibly simple and straight forward. The instructions were clear and there was nothing tricky. However, both times I tried to roll up my spiral and tape it shut into a rose it would unravel. Even trying to glue or tape on the bottom did nothing to secure it. This craft would probably have been better with a video to accompany it. As it is, I don’t think this would be an enjoyable craft for any child. It would more likely be frustrating as the rose keeps falling apart.

Application to Libraries or Classroom (3-5 quality sentences; why/how a library or teacher could use it or not):

This would be a good craft for Halloween in libraries and classrooms. It can also be modified to create other monsters. This is a cost effective craft and gives the children something fun to play with.

Critique (7-10 quality sentences; any problems, areas for improvement, great parts, useful parts):

This craft was very straightforward. The instructions were clear and the pictures provided helped clarify and of the slightly too simple instructions. Using a hot glue gun, everything went on fast and stayed. The hardest part was finding a neon green pom pom for his body. The craft only took a few minutes and would be cost effective in large numbers. I also enjoyed how this craft could easily be adapted to creating more monster pom poms. Overall, this was a simple and fun craft that with the aid of an adult for the gluing can be completed by even a five year old.

Activity 4 #: No Sew Felt Vegetables

APA Citation of Source (where you got the idea from):

K. (2017, April 14). DIY No Sew Frugal Felt Garden Craft for Kids. Retrieved from

Intended Audience (this should be almost the same each time):

  5 to 9 year olds

Brief Description (3-5 quality sentences):

This craft uses felt to make vegetables. This is more of a free form project. There were no instructions on shape, just suggestions on how to add the green felt. There were plenty of pictures for examples though.

Application to Libraries or Classroom (3-5 quality sentences; why/how a library or teacher could use it or not):

This would be an excellent craft for so many topics, including healthy eating and growing. This is a simple craft that can be done by cutting out shapes and gluing them together. Felt is inexpensive so a classroom sized group could easily make a few vegetables each.

Critique (7-10 quality sentences; any problems, areas for improvement, great parts, useful parts):

This was incredibly simple with the pictures provided. I loved that there were no strict instructions on what exactly to do. This gave me the freedom to pick any vegetable I wanted to make how I wanted to make it. This would be an excellent craft to use to get children to practice using their creativity. Just hand them the felt and tell them to make some vegetables. Even if half the group makes carrots they all might be different. This craft was simple, fun , and very creative.

Application to Libraries or Classroom (3-5 quality sentences; why/how a library or teacher could use it or not):

This would make an excellent game day craft. A lot of children are watching or playing Pokémon in some fashion. This craft would be a fun way to get children using their creativity and they might even try making other Pokémon.

Critique (7-10 quality sentences; any problems, areas for improvement, great parts, useful parts):

This craft was very simple. The only difficulty I had was getting the black construction paper to match up with the yellow ears. The gluing made everything faster since I used a hot glue gun. This craft could also be made with regular glue and more time. I enjoyed how this craft was simple but could easily spark the creativity of older children to try creating other Pokémon that they like from the games and shows. This is an excellent craft to lead into some free creative time for the children. Overall, this Pikachu was fun to make.

These would be excellent crafts to use at libraries and classrooms to both encourage reading and recycling. These bookmarks are cost effective and easy to make. For younger children they can easily be entertainment as well.

Critique (7-10 quality sentences; any problems, areas for improvement, great parts, useful parts):

The instructions were easy to follow. There was a lot of creative freedom allowed through color choice and pendant choice. There were plenty of pictures and diagrams to use, just in case of confusion. I liked making these because they are fun, unique, and you don’t worry as much about destroying them through use as you would with a paper bookmark. Overall, this was a simple craft that would be fun for all ages.

Activity 7 #: Pipe Cleaner Pals

APA Citation of Source (where you got the idea from):

Stewart, M. (2013). Pipe Cleaner Pals. In Martha Stewart's Favorite Crafts for Kids (pp. 20-21). New York: Potter Craft.

Intended Audience (this should be almost the same each time):

  5 to 9 year olds

Brief Description (3-5 quality sentences):

This is a simple craft that uses pipe cleaners to make animals. There are instructions for a chameleon, tiger, squirrel, and monkey. Other than pipe cleaners all you need are scissors, felt, and a marker.

Application to Libraries or Classroom (3-5 quality sentences; why/how a library or teacher could use it or not):

This would be a fun craft to accompany an animal or zoo story time. There are a few animals to pick from and they can be used to act out scenes from the book afterwards. This is a very versatile craft that can be used to accompany many different themes.

Critique (7-10 quality sentences; any problems, areas for improvement, great parts, useful parts):

There were only a few parts in the instructions that could have dealt with clarification. I was a bit worried about the cut ends of the pipe cleaner stabbing the person holding it so I did my best to tuck in the edges. I also used googly eyes instead of felt. They were easy to make and each one turned out a little different. The hardest part is getting the feet balanced so that they can stand. Overall, they were an interesting challenge and fun to play with.

7 to 10 year olds

Brief Description (3-5 quality sentences):

This craft uses felt and bobby pins to make barrettes. This is a simple craft with a many different ways to change it. Instead of bobby pin the craft could use barrettes. Each flower can be as many different colors as there is felt available.

Application to Libraries or Classroom (3-5 quality sentences; why/how a library or teacher could use it or not):

This would make an excellent springtime or Mothers day craft. It is simple and easy to make. The only difficulty would be the hot glue gun.

Critique (7-10 quality sentences; any problems, areas for improvement, great parts, useful parts):

This was a fun and easy craft. The barrettes turned out wonderfully and the instructions were easy to follow. There are so many different flowers that can be made simply by changing the colors. These would make excellent Mothers Day gifts. The hot glue posed a small problem. Using too much would glue the bobby pin together as well. This is not a large issue, however, filing the glue down can help fix it.

Critique (7-10 quality sentences; any problems, areas for improvement, great parts, useful parts):

This monster bookmark was fun to make. There was no right or wrong way to make it. I would definitely pair this project with some other monster crafts to do a monster themed storytime near Halloween. These make excellent bookmarks, they don’t damage the book and they are clearly visible. I think boys will really enjoy this craft, making their bookmarks as scary as they can. Overall this was a fun project with a lot of potential.

This is an excellent craft to use for a sea themed storytime. If made beforehand, the children could use it for the reading as well. This would be a simple and fun craft.

Critique (7-10 quality sentences; any problems, areas for improvement, great parts, useful parts):

This craft was fast and easy. I had a little difficulty cutting out the tale but other than that everything turned out wonderfully. The puppet is small enough for my finger and looks very cute. I can’t wait to use him during a storytime. This craft gave me a lot of ideas for other small finger puppets than can be made using the same method. Overall, this is a simple craft to make a toy that can be used repeatedly. I would definitely do this craft with a group of children.
