Student Contract

Psychology and You is a course designed to provide you with a basic understanding of human behavior while providing students with the information necessary to gain an understanding of themselves and the people around them. A broad spectrum of information about the field of psychology will be presented to you and you will be able to discover psychological principals associated with many branches of psychology. Established theories and experiments will be discussed along with our own scientific inquiries. This course will cover a range of topics such as: the history of psychology, psychological approaches, the brain, behavior, sensation and perception, consciousness and dreams and mental disorders.

To ensure your success, please read the following classroom policies and procedures and then complete the bottom of the contract.

PREPARATION:

▪ Come to class every day, on time, prepared to work

▪ Supplies:

o 3-ring hard cover binder / scrapbook – this will serve as your course portfolio and final project.

o A binder for class notes / handouts (you may share with another course)

o Loose-leaf paper

o Pens (black or blue only) and pencils

o Highlighters/Markers

▪ You must be prepared and bring your binder to class EVERY DAY, as well as a pen, pencil, and homework assignments.

HOMEWORK:

▪ Homework will be assigned and is used to reflect on course material or to prepare for the next class.

▪ Homework is randomly collected and graded. Each homework is worth 5 points; incomplete or sloppy homework will receive partial credit. (Please see homework rubric)

▪ Homework is due on the assigned date during your class period. Any other time is considered late. Late homework will be accepted up to one (1) day for ½ half credit.

▪ If you are absent from class the day an assignment is due, you must turn it in on the day you return to class to receive full credit.

ATTENDANCE & LATENESS:

▪ Students are expected to be present every class in order to ensure they are gaining a complete understanding of the course material. However, life happens so…

o If you are absent it is your responsibility to find out what you missed and make up any work. There are numerous ways you can do this:

▪ Contact a classmate

▪ See your assignment sheet and check the class e-board

▪ Feel free to see me or email me ( hbellisari@commack.k12.ny.us )

▪ BE ON TIME! You are expected to be in your seat when the bell rings. If you are late come in with a pass or you will be marked illegal. Three illegal late to class equals a cut…school policy!

EXAMS / QUIZZES / PROJECTS /ASSESSMENTS:

Tests, quizzes and assessments will be given throughout the marking period. Quizzes will be given regularly; they can be announced or unannounced. Exams and other assessments may be in the form of multiple-choice, vocabulary, or an on demand task (ODT) assignment, including short reflection papers. They are given to gear your understanding of the material we are learning.

These can be given as individual or with a group. Even if given as a group, students will receive individual grades. These can be in the form of multiple choice, presentations or research papers.

Reflective portfolio:

You will work on one long-term individual reflection portfolio throughout this course. This portfolio will help you to reflect upon your past, examine the present, and set goals for your future. You will also analyze your life: past, present and future based on psychological theories and concepts learned. Each marking period a section of the portfolio will be collected and graded as an assessment. A detailed handout will be provided for each task required.

The final reflection portfolio counts as your final exam grade!

PARTICIPATION:

This course is centered around discussions and it’s a fact- the more you participate and become involved the better your understanding of the material will be. I will make sure that the classroom is an open environment that encourages every student to express their views and ideas, so feel free to speak up and be heard! Participation averages will be determined according to student self-evaluations and a teacher assessment.

Extra help is officially offered before (7:00am-7:20am) and after school (2:25pm-3:30pm) on Wednesdays in room 213. However, if additional extra help is needed please see me to schedule a meeting. Extra help is a great way to ensure success!
