COURSE OBJECTIVES: After Physical Science, students should be able to:

Science Inquiry:

1. Understand what science is, and how to use the scientific method and how to measure and present data.

Earth Science:

2. Identify the Earth’s structure, minerals and how the rock cycle and plate tectonics affect the Earth’s structure.

3. Distinguish what processes shape the Earth’s surface and how they can be used to study Earth’s history.

4. Classify matter and learn the differences between physical and chemical properties.

Chemistry:

5. Understand different atomic theories and about subatomic particles and their properties.

6. Describe the organization of the elements and their properties.

7. Compare and contrast different bonds and how they are formed, and how to describe different reaction types.

Physics:

8. Compare and contrast distance, displacement, speed, velocity, and acceleration are related to one another.

9. Demonstrate an understanding of Newton’s Law’s and how they affect motion and how force and pressure are related.

10. Demonstrate an understanding of what work, power, and energy are and how they are related.

11. Describe how machines effect work, power, and energy.

SUPPLIES: Students will need the following materials:

1. One 1 inch binder for all handouts.

2. Pen and pencils

3. One spiral note for notes (please keep an extra notebook @ home for extra credit)

4. Texas Instruments TI-30XA calculator

GRADING: Grading is an area of concern for students, parents, teachers, and administrators. There is no perfect way to assess student achievement; however, I grade on the percentage basis with the following activities being used to determine a student’s performance.

1. Unit test and quizzes (Quizzes can be announced and unannounced!!!)

**will equal 60% of the total grade**

**students will have the opportunity to pretest out of a particular chapter (90% or higher)

- this allows students to engage in material that is appropriate for their needs**

-all enrichment work must be parent/guardian and instructor approved

**all students will have the opportunity to take re-test for less credit than the original test (5% deduction)**

**all test and quizzes will be TIERED; tiered assessments allow for student success but are not graded equally! (A – Test & B – Test)

2. Homework: classroom assignments, lab reports, group projects, and student binders

**will equal 30%of the total grade**

**Late work will be as followed:

-I WILL ACCEPT LATE WORK; HOWEVER, YOU WILL RECEIVE A 70%.

3. Performance: correct use of the STUDENT AGENDA, lab safety, group cooperation during projects, returned progress reports, and modeling of the “The WD Way.”

** will equal 10% of the total grade

STUDENT ATTENDANCE: Please refer to your student planner.

STUDENT TARDIES: Please refer to your student planner. My expectation is….you must be in my room when the bell starts to ring.

A = 96, 97, 98, 99, 100 (4.00) C+ = 83, 84 (2.50) D+ = 75, 76 (1.50)

A- = 93, 94, 95 (3.75) C = 79, 80, 81, 82 (2.00) D = 72, 73, 74 (1.00)

B+ = 91, 92 (3.50) C- = 77, 78 (1.75) D- = 70, 71 (0.75)

B = 87, 88, 89, 90 (3.00) F = 69 (0.00)

B- = 85, 86 (2.75)

DISCIPLINE: The 9th Grade Physical Science rules will coincide with the School Board approved expectation outline in your student planner.

“The WD Way”, which is our High School’s TOUCHSTONE, will always be an influencing factor when discipline is involved

Special rules which only apply to Physical Science classes are as followed:

1. Brining a POSITIVE ATTITUDE!!!!

2. Be on time and ready when the bell rings.

3. Follow directions when given the first time.

4. Respect yourself and others in the class.

CONSEQUENCES: Class consequences will also coincide with the School Board approved expectations outlined in your student planner. Protocol will be the following for behavioral issues:

1. Simple warning

2. Classroom detention served with the teacher (30 minutes)

3. Parent contact and two classroom detentions served with the teacher (30 minutes a piece)

4. Administrative intervention

The following are expectations that I have deemed fair and reasonable for Physical Science students.
