It is County Committee election time and eligible individuals from Local Administrative Area (LAA) 1, which includes the towns of Ashford, Canterbury, Chaplin, Eastford, Hampton, Scotland, and Windham, can submit nominations for committee members starting June 15th. County Committee members are responsible for the fair and equitable administration of FSA farm programs and are accountable to the Secretary of Agriculture. By being elected, you become part of local decision making that may help national decision making. Eligible voters in LAA-1 will be receiving a special edition newsletter explaining the nomination process and including a nomination form. Crop Insurance

Requirements

It is time to report acreage for crop insurance purposes. There are many changes that effect your crop insurance coverage this year; prevented planting, late planting and possible changes to your farm serial numbers.

Where do you start?

1. Contact your crop insurance agent if you experience delayed or prevented planting

2. Complete your acreage report at the Farm Service Agency

3. Complete your crop insurance acreage report. Include your FSA 578 form

Don’t forget to report:

Any added land

Crop acreage that you were prevented from planting by unit

Don’t forget to mark your calendar, “Celebrating Agriculture” is Saturday, Sept. 22, from 9am-3pm. The day will be filled with food and fun, with a focus on showcasing the importance of agriculture in the community. There will be agricultural displays and demonstrations, hayrides, farm tour, games, animals, entertainment, and a forestry fair. The event is free, but if you choose to enjoy the hearty farm breakfast offered from 9am-11am, a $4 donation is requested for adults and $2 donation for children under the age of 10 years. FSA Measurement Services

The Farm Service Agency offers measurement services to determine exact areas designated for specific cropland or land use, for crop appraisals, and to determine quantity of farm stored commodities. To find out more about these services and applicable fees call the Windham county FSA office.
