DeForest Area School District

Board of Education Meeting Minutes,

Monday, June 9, 2014 – 6:30 pm.

1. Convene

President Jan Berg called the June 9, 2014 regular meeting of the DeForest Area School District’s Board of Education to order at 6:16 p.m.

Board members present: Jan Berg, Steve Tenpas, Jim Pertzborn, Terri Treinen, DeAnna Giovanni, Kate Lund and Christopher McFarlin. Absent were: Dan Choi and Mike Hirsch. Also present were administrators Sue Borden, Ann Higgins, Sue Wilson, Diane Pertzborn, Vickie Adkins, Roy Bernards, Ann Schoenberger and Mike Weisensel.

Sue Borden verified that the meeting was properly noticed.

The Pledge of Allegiance and Hands Pledge were recited.

On a motion by Giovanni, seconded by Tenpas and passed unanimously by voice vote the agenda was approved.

Terri Treinen recited the DeForest Area School District’s Mission and Vision Statements.

2. Appearances Before the Board of Education

Public Input: Jenny Thorkildson represented residents of Sunset Meadows subdivision and spoke regarding bus transportation & safety concerns.

A. Ends Discussion

1.) Eagle Point Elementary School facility input and tour (Ann Schoenberger) (EL 6: Programs and Services) (10 min.)

Discussion: Principal, Ann Schoenberger gave a tour of Eagle Point Elementary School and shared some of the challenges of the aging facility. Small classrooms, lack of air conditioning, minimal storage and lack of private conference room space are among some of the challenges that staff work with and will be further considered as the study of facilities moves forward.

2. )Instructional integration of technology at Eagle Point Elementary School (Ann Schoenberger) (EL 6: Programs and Services) (15 min.)

Discussion: Eagle Point Elementary third grade teacher, Jenni Naramore, shared some of the technology tools she has used with her class. She showed her use of blogs, Google Earth, QR codes and the software, Wordle and how she has incorporated those tools into her teaching and student projects.

3.) Presentation of concepts for elementary facilities (Steve Kieckhafer, Plunkett Raysich

Architects) (EL 2: Communication and Support to the Board; EL 10 Facilities) (90 min.)

Discussion: Director of Business and Auxiliary Services, Diane Pertzborn explained the next phase in developing long-range facility plans for the District is to look at concepts for facilities. She introduced Steve Kieckhafer, Plunkett Raysich Architects who reviewed conceptual ideas for addressing facility needs at elementary schools based on information gathered in the past 8 months as the Board has studied facility needs. Kieckhafer presented several conceptual drawings and options for Eagle Point, Yahara and Windsor Elementary Schools. He presented options that may be possible to address the elementary needs while also meeting the Board’s guiding principles for space needs, developed earlier this year. The conceptual ideas were created for discussion only in preparation for engaging the community in similar discussions in the near future. At the next Board meeting, Pertzborn will discuss fiscal responsibility and financial affordability of moving to the next phase in facility planning. Community forums will be announced shortly, happening in July, and a community advisory group is currently being developed.

B. Consideration for Board of Education Action

1.) Consider ratification of an agreement with DASS (DeForest Area Support Staff) for a 2014-2015

employment contract for base wages (EL 5: Compensation and Benefits) (5 min.)

DeAnna Giovanni left the room for this agenda item and vote, due to a conflict of interest.

On a motion by Tenpas, seconded by McFarlin The Board of Education of the DeForest Area School District voted to ratifiy an agreement with DASS (DeForest Area Support Staff) for a 2014-2015 employment contract for base wages. The motion passed by a unanimous voice vote., with Treinen abstaining and Giovanni absent from the room and abstaining from the vote.

2.) Consider approval of supplemental pay resolution for DASS for 2014-2015 (EL 5: Compensation and Benefits) (5 min.)

On a motion by McFarlin, seconded by Tenpas, the Board of Education of the DeForest Area School District voted to approve a supplemental pay resolution for DASS (DeForest Area Support Staff) for 2014-2015. The motion passed by a unanimous voice vote, with Treinen abstaining and Giovanni absent from the room and abstaining from the vote.

After the vote, Giovanni returned to the meeting.

On a motion by Lund, seconded by McFarlin and passed unanimously by voice vote, the Consent Agenda was approved, with Treinen abstaining from the portions of the monitoring report related to DASS employment contracts and employee handbooks.

6. Linkages

Board Members: Tenpas spoke at High School Graduation, with Choi and Treinen in attendance.

Administration: Sue Borden will be working with the Village of DeForest police department on a potential grant to address traffic safety near school buildings.

The press was given the opportunity to clarify any proceedings or notes.

8. Adjourn

The Board of Education adjourned at 9:25 pm on a motion by Tenpas, seconded by Lund, and passed unanimously by voice vote.
