Name: _______________________ Period: _______________ Class Days: _________Exploration of a New WorldAnd the Columbian Exchange1. Similarities of the two maps: They both show 3 oceans, give an outline of Africa, Europe and Asia2. Differences of the two maps: The new map lists countries and does not have continents labeled. The new map has all the continents and oceans. The new map has latitude, longitude, the Equator and the Prime Meridian. The old map has a compass rose. The two maps have different shapes for Africa, Europe and Asia.3. Possible reasons the printing press would help change the world: It made more books possible to more people, which means introducing more people to new ideas and new worlds to explore.4. Possible reasons countries of Europe would explore the world: To see what the rest of the world looked like, to find riches, to bring religion to other people.5. One reason Europe wanted to explore was to gain more knowledge. They wanted to know more about the world.6. Another reason Europe began to explore the world was to search for the riches of gold, silver and precious gems. They were in debt because of engaging in too many wars.7. A third reason countries of Europe began to travel and explore the world was spices.8. Both France and Spain wanted to convert people to Christianity. 9. Also religious persecution forced people to leave Europe.10. People explored the New World in search of animal furs.11. But probably the biggest reason for leaving Europe was the search for spices.12. The journeys of Marco Polo stimulated Europe’s interest in finding spices in the Far East.13. The quest for quicker, ocean trade routes was greatly improved in the late 1400s. 14. Rudders, masts and keels improved the boat’s strength, mobility and speed when explorers traveled out on the high seas.15. When exploring new worlds, European countries believed they owned:A. the land they conquered B. the people and natural resources 16.What was unusual about Columbus’s route to the Far East? He traveled west to go east.17. The vikings arrived in North America about 500 years before Columbus.18. Two countries that took the lead at first to explore were Spain and Portugal19. Describe the way Spain treated Native American: cruel and inhumane20. Three reasons the Spanish had an advantage over the Native Americans include: the Spanish had horses, armor, better arms and more of them.21. A 4th reason the Native Americans fell to the Spanish was their lack of immunity to many diseases that the Spanish brought with them to the Americas.22. During the 200+ years of exploration of the New World, the entire world got a little closer and it began to share its wealth.23. This time period was known as the Columbian Exchange.24. Europe received the following items from the Western Hemisphere: tomato, potato, peanuts, pumpkin, and turkey25. The New World received from Europe: coffee, beef, horses, diseases, sugar, and grains26. People from England began to explore to escape poverty, political oppression to have religious freedom or work as an indentured servant.27. In short, people from England just wanted to start a new life.28. Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement.29. Jamestown was considered a success because it had its own government.30. Jamestown also had the support of England and was the first settlement to survive beyond settlement and continue as a colony.31. The French explored for two reasons. One was their interest in fur trade. 32. Like the Spanish, the French were also interest in converting Native Americans to Christianity.33. However, unlike the Spanish, the French treated the Native Americans fairly34. Why would the French treat the Native Americans fairly? The French knew that they needed the natives’ help in order to survive.1. Many early civilizations used a written language of hieroglyphs, (symbols and signs), such as the Maya and Aztec.2. The most common food among many Native American Groups was maize,/corn.3. Instead of using a calculator to add up numbers, the Inca used quipus which were colored cords with knots tied into them to represent numbers. 4. The Inca kept excellent census records (population count) with their quipus, but most were destroyed during their conquest.5. A wave of Spanish conquistadors (conquerors) in the early 1500s disrupted and destroyed many nations native to the Americas.6. Unfortunately, Native Americans had no immunities (defenses or resistance) to European diseases: it would have made for a much fairer fight.7. Some nations or people form alliances in which they have an agreement or truce to look out for and protect each other.8. The Inca were fighting a civil war (a war within a nation) in the 1520s, which allowed the Spanish to more easily defeat them, (along with their horses, armor and gun powder).9. Much like ancient Rome, the Aztec built an empire (expanding nation) in which they conquered other Native Americans and took their land and resources.10. The Inca built great aqueducts, (bridges, tunnels and stone pipe) in order to bring or transport water hundreds of miles to their villages.11. Hernan Cortez was a conquistador, who exploited (took advantage of) the natives that he encountered. He used them to meet his own needs of waging war and then enslaving them.26289001624330#2400#2426289004138930#2500#25048133000 ................
