Element Brochure Project

Element Brochure Project

(due Monday, March 7, 2011)

Purpose of the Project:

To help students gain a greater understanding of elements and how they are used in everyday life.

Directions:

Students will conduct research to find information regarding their assigned element. Students will complete a My Element Worksheet and then create an Element Brochure that illustrates this information through written explanation, pictures, and drawings.

Use these sites to help you!

(This site should be used to figure out how many electrons are in each shell)

The Element Brochure will consist of 6 pages:

1. Cover Page

a. Name and symbol of element

b. 2 colored pictures of your element

c. Your name, date, and period

2. Historical Information

a. Year Discovered

b. Scientists related to the element

c. Where it is found

d. Past uses

e. Any other interesting historical information

3. Characteristics and Properties

a. Most Common State of Matter on Earth

b. Phase of matter at room temperature

c. Color, Texture, Hardness, Smell

d. Melting/Freezing and Boiling Point

e. Density

f. Oxidation state

g. Periodic Table Classification

4. Subatomic Parts

a. Picture/Drawing of Bohr Model & Dot Diagram

b. Atomic Number of your Element

c. Atomic Mass of your Element

d. What are any isotopes

5. Common Uses Today

a. Minimum of 4 common uses

b. Common compounds it forms

6. Poem or Catchy Jingle (5 full sentences that incorporate the element’s importance!)
