Dear Beverly Woods Families:

Throughout the year, we provide regular updates to you about your child’s academic progress by conducting parent/teacher conferences and sending home progress reports, as well as a quarterly report card. Once a year, we provide you with updates on our school’s achievements through the North Carolina School Report Card. This Report Card includes important information about school and student performance, class sizes, attendance, school safety, instructional resources, and teacher quality. There is also information about how our school measured against federal Annual Measurable Objectives (AMO) targets and the number of suspensions and expulsions in our school. The North Carolina School Report Card will be sent home with students around February 20th.

This year, for the first time, report cards will also include an A through F School Performance Grade. The performance grade is based on a 15-point scale this year (out of 100). The state’s School Performance Grade for Beverly Woods Elementary is B. Our overall performance for 2013-2014 was 82. Next year the state will calculate performance on a ten-point scale. Our school’s full Report Card can be found on the NC School Report Cards’ website at .

The grades are calculated and reported by the NC Department of Public Instruction which is required, based on legislation passed by the North Carolina General Assembly last year. They are based 80 percent on proficiency (the percentage of students in the school at or above grade level in a specific subject) and 20 percent on growth (the rate at which students in the school learned over the past year). All students in grades third through fifth are given an end of year assessment, including students in our self- contained classes taking alternate assessment called Extend 1. We are proud of meeting all growth expectations last year.

The numbers on the Report Card only tell part of the story. At Beverly Woods, we are proud to have a strong, caring staff which supports the whole child. As one of the schools in the first cohort of the Student Success by Design Collaborative, we are able to design instruction which meets the needs of every child. We do this through flexible grouping of students based on pre- and post-assessment data, and teacher strengths target the individual needs of our children. Our teachers collaborate daily to develop instructional strategies that will motivate and challenge our students. There is a culture of collective ownership of students. We are so fortunate to have students who enjoy being at school and actively participate in the learning process, which in turn, creates high levels of student engagement. Students have opportunities to participate in

additional activities such as character education and service learning, character council, peer mediators, adaptive PE and allegro peer buddies, and the morning broadcast. Our students are also involved in various service projects which benefit our community. Parent support is strong, and our PTA and school leadership team work on behalf of all students.

While we are proud of our accomplishments, there is still work to do. Our goal is to have every child performing at or above their current grade level expectations by the end of the academic year. This important work begins in the early grades and even before children enters kindergarten. We will continue to provide a balanced literacy framework as children in our primary grades learn to read, and children in the upper grades read to learn. Coaching and support is provided by our literacy and math/science facilitators within planning sessions and in classrooms. We are working to ensure that students become strong problem solvers and independent thinkers as we help them become career or college ready.

Your involvement is very important to the success of our school. Well-informed families who participate in their children’s education and school enhance the learning environment for students and educators alike. Reading at home with your child each night is critical, as is taking time to discuss what your child has read. We will continue to partner with our parents to provide information for reinforcing skill development at home.

As always, please feel free to contact me directly to discuss any questions or concerns you may have regarding the Report Card. I also welcome your feedback regarding other interests you have in our school. Thank you for choosing Beverly Woods Elementary for your child’s education, and for supporting our efforts to provide your child with a high-quality education.
