Shared focus on retaining effective staff as well as implementing Balanced Literacy. Team signed off on SIP. Ms. Wardy explained that after the review and approval that the plan would be submitted to SLC. General excitement regarding the presence of a Spanish-speaking chair expressed as it allows the SLT to reach out to a large population of our parents. Testing OverviewPrincipal Beth Wardy7:30-7:40PresentationTeam common understanding of new rigorous standards for students: Powerpoint Overview of performance on Common Core testing Spring 2012-Ms. Wardy shared PowerPoint regarding 2012-13 SY test scores. -Ms. Wardy shared with parents the proficiency rates for the school, and she shared that her goal is for student growth. She stated that students who are severely behind the goal is two years of growth, and the goal for students who are on track is 1-1.5 years. What are your long/short term goals for Sterling?Ms. Way-Prater asked about test timing and reading fatigue: is that contributing to low test scores. Beth shared how Reader's Workshop is helping to build reading skills and stamina. Layla shared how reader's workshop and mini-lessons are addressing a variety of reading needs, including non-fiction.Naesha Leggins shared her daughters' love of comic strips and that they keep her attention in reading. How can this be incorporated into literacy and math instruction? Ms. Leggins shared how much of a difference an excellent teacher is currently making for her in college. Beth summarized Naesha's comment to be a request for project based learning. Tasha asked what are our goals as a committee: how can we make learning fun for the students as well as the teachers? Layla states the importance of compliments and growth. Lorena shared that it is important to establish a culture of reading at home for all of our students, especially in our Latino families. She shared a personal experience about moving to the US and how she grew a love of reading.Ginger spoke about awareness. How aware are parents of the testing in the building and student progress. Do parents and students know their reading levels? Do people understand how to set appropriate goals? pHow do we communicate expectations and goals?
