William is a doctor of philosophy. Hayes. b) William Rhoads Murphy IV born 5 Apr 1949 is also a PhD and was in Damascus, Syria, at the time of this writing. 12854. Bertha Evelyn Murphy was born 11 Jul 1923. She married 12 Jun 1948 in Chestnut Hill, PA, Richards Gait Miller, son of Milton Valentine and Clair (Richards) Miller, born 8 Feb 1922 in Philadelphia. Their children were born in Philadelphia as follows: a) Richards Gait Miller II born 5 May 1950 is unmarried and lives in Burlington, VT. b) Margaret Hoopes Miller born 23 Jun 1952 married 8 May 1976 in Philadelphia, PA, Kenneth William Class, son of Carl Frederick and Constance (Goaslind) Class, born 30 Oct 1951 in Philadelphia, PA. They have a son: ba) Carl Frederick Class V born 9 Sep 1979 in Fairfax, VA. c) Sydney Grayson Miller born 22 Sep 1955 married 20 Sep 1980 in Philadelphia, PA, Richard Balfour Fox, son of Balfour and Elizabeth (Mullin) Fox born 8 Sep 1954.

9043. THOMAS TEMPLE HOOPES, son of Wilford Lawrence and Lillie Edith (Merrill) Hoopes, was born 31 Mar 1898 in Boston, MA and died Easter Sunday, 19 Apr 1981. He married 1) on 7 Aug 1936, EDITH KENDE, daughter of Samuel and Melanie (Hosner) Kende, born 22 Mar 1900 in Vienna, Austria and died 5 Dec 1954 in St. Louis, MO. Thomas married 2) on 8 Jun 1964 in St. Louis, MO, CATHERINE FILSINGER, daughter of Adolph Frank and Delia Rosalie (Bamber) Filsinger, born 29 Jun 1911 in St. Louis, MO. There were no children born to either union. In 1983, Catherine is still living in family home at 48 Washington Terrace, St. Louis, MO 63112.

Dr. Tom (as those of us who knew him fondly called him) received his A. B. from Harvard "honoris causa" in 1920, concentrating on electrical physics. From 1921 to 1931 he attended N.Y.U. Graduate School, Dept, of Fine Arts. Arms and Armor was his special field. He received his A. M. in 1926 and a PhD in 1931. In addition to the regular arts courses, Dr. Hoopes took, by special permission, courses in Chinese in the Dept, of Commerce at N.Y.U., in Chinese and Japanese at Columbia U. and in German and comparative philology at the U. of Berlin.

From 1920-1927, Dr. Tom was Assistant and Assistant Curator, Dept, of Arms and Armor at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. In 1935-6, his services were lent to the Austrian Museum of Art in New York City. He had complete charge of rearrangement of Imperial Austrian Firearms Collection at Waffensammlung des Kunsthistorischen Museums in Vienna. From 1936-1964, Dr. Tom was curator at City Art Museum in St. Louis, MO. In 1964, he retired as Curator Emeritus.

Dr. Tom traveled extensively, lectured tirelessly, had an impressive list of publications on a variety of subjects; was involved with at least one educational film which he wrote, supervised photography, directed action, etc. He also presented a number of radio and TV shows in the 1940's and 1950's.

A generous and i n t e r e s t e d c h art er member of t h e Hoopes F a m i l y Organization, it was specifically because of Dr. Tom's generosity that Vol. I was printed when it was. In his will, he cancelled our financial indebtedness to him; however we can never repay our debt of gratitude. For this reason, Vol. II-III are dedicated to his memory. 9045. ELMER ROYDEN STRETCH, son of Elmer Beesely and Mary Rebecca (Hoopes) Stretch, was born 22 Nov 1888 in Philadelphia, PA and died there 6 Dec 1971. He married in Philadelphia on 1 Feb 1921, GLADYS EVADNE REYNOLDS, daughter of George Thomas and Hilda (Stevenson) Reynolds, born 27 May 1895 in Providence, RI.

Issue Surname Stretch: (Born in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA) 12855. Elizabeth Stretch was born 19 Jun 1922. She married 22 Aug 1945 in Haddonfield, NJ, William Henry, son of Vernon Russell and Georgetta (Loudenslager) Henry, born 4 Sep 1922 in Philadelphia, PA and died 27 Jun 1972 in Cleveland, OH in a plane crash. He was a Navy pilot. They had five children:

Alban is a retired professor.

9047. CARL WILLIAM FUNK, JR., son of Carl William and Helen Forrester (Hoopes) Funk, was born 9 Aug 1900 in Philadelphia, PA and died there on 7 Jan 1981. He married 8 Aug 1945 in Philadelphia, MADELINE ELIZABETH HAWKES, daugher of Richard John James and Onera Amelia (Merritt) Hawkes, born 13 May 1907 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.

9058. KENT BARLAGE HOOPES, son of Washington Irving, Jr. and Esther Ada (Barlage) Hoopes, was born 12 Sep 1927 in Pasadena, CA. He married in Yuma, AZ on 19 Jan 1955, RUTH ACOSTA, daughter of Robert and Claudia (Perez) Acosta, born 6 Jul 1932 in Yuma, AZ. Her first husband was Umberto Sanchez by whom she had a child who took the Hoopes name. In 1960, Kent was a San Diego Co. Deputy Sheriff. At last correspondence the family lived at 2125 Hilldale, Oceanside, CA.

SCHUYLER LEE HOOPES, son of Washington Irving, Jr. and Esther Ada (Barlage) Hoopes, was born 2 Dec 1928 at Brawley, CA. He married there on 27 May 1949, EVA JAYNE LEEPER, daughter of Ira Otis and Geneva Elzora (MacFarland) Leeper, born 28 Sep 1928 in Honn, AR. Schuyler holds a B. S. in Electrical Engineering from Washington State U. and is a past member of the Board with the Presbyterian Church. Eva is a homemaker who had recently "encountered" rheumatoid arthritis which has prevented her from playing the tennis she used to enjoy. They have made their home in Del Mar, CA for a number of years and their address is 560 Van Dyke Ave., Del Mar, CA 92104.

Issue: 12864. Lisa Erin Hoopes was born 28 Feb 1962 in San Diego, CA. When her mother wrote in 1978, Lisa was finishing high school. She owned and showed an Appaloosa gelding in Hunt Seat and Jumper shows. She was to have been entered in an equestrian school in Jan 1979. NFI.

9061. JOHN "JACK" MARLYN HOOPES, son of James Armstrong and Pearl Leona (Hamor) Hoopes, was born 7 Aug 1923 in Ridley Park, PA. He married in Philadelphia, PA on 7 Nov 1942, MARGARET CATHERINE WITTS, daughter of George and Margaret Catherine (Buck) Wilts.
