Welcome to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton
TO FELLOW DISCIPLES OF OUR LORD JESUS: Back when I was still in the seminary, training and preparing to become a priest, (and this was certainly a LONG time ago!) one of our seminary rectors had a large sign behind his desk that read, "As I am slowly sinking in this quick sand, with mosquitoes swarming around my head and alligators nipping at my behind, it is hard to remember that I really came here to drain this swamp!"
And that is this weekend's Gospel. It is from St. John's Gospel, chapter 2, wherein Jesus enters the temple and then recognizes the abuses being committed by the money changers and the merchants buying and selling the items needed for their form of worship. Jesus immediately makes a whip of cords and physically drives them all out of temple area and it is recorded that He even dumps over their tables and money boxes spilling them all over the entire area. Jesus then speaks these words, "Take these out of here, you are making my Father's house a marketplace!"
Can you see the connection between the thoughts of my seminary rector and those of Jesus? We all start out with great intentions but then it is so easy to get sidetracked. The seminary rector came there to help improve the training of future priests. But along the way, he got so involved and overcome with the dayto-day problems, that he could very easily get lost from his initial intention. The money changers and the merchants in the temple were necessary according to the rules of worship for the Jewish faith. They believed that in order to keep the temple worship pure and holy, only the Jewish coins could be used. All other foreign currency, honoring other (false) gods, would be an affront to the one true God, so those coins had to be changed into Jewish shekels. Similarly, all animals used in sacrifice had to be physically perfect. Most of the animals that people would bring would not match that standard, so everyone had to buy their animals from those who had prepared them and sold them in this temple area. But instead of keeping all of this honest, it was so easy for the money changers and the merchants to "charge" a little extra because the people coming to them had no choice--either pay the fees or you cannot enter for worship.
happened to us. Consider your job or occupation. When you began it was just great--the best thing that ever happened to you. It was perfect. But then after a while more work was piled on your plate, or the boss or others became more demanding or picky, or more hours were expected, and you just lost your focus of why you ever took this job in the first place. Consider your marriage or any relationship. Usually it starts off with great love and those wonderful feelings of euphoria. There is nothing greater in life that being "in love!" Then you got married and the stresses of life and maybe children or sickness or countless other experiences changed both of you and you end up not ever talking with each other or spending any time together. He has his room in the basement and she has her room upstairs. And you wonder why did I ever get into this marriage or relationship in the first place? Now think about our religion. We all want to do the correct thing and worship and pray with good intentions and dignity. To do this we make some rules on how worship should be done. But then over time, the rules become more important than the prayer. In our Catholic Church, we have a lot of rules about our worship and there are people who watch if any of these rules are broken. We call them the "liturgical police." The rules have become more significant than the quality of prayer together. Our ritual of the Mass is not just to be performed correctly, it is the highest form of prayer-period. I always say to those who minster at our Masses, after it is finished, always ask yourself "Did I pray?" or "Was this really a prayer for me or just a job or a performance.?"
The people in the temple with Jesus had forgotten why they were there; just like many times we forget why we are doing something or living a certain way. Please take time this Lent to reexamine what you are doing and why you are doing it. Take time to get back to the beginning--the basics of what you originally signed up for--job, marriage, Mass, prayer, etc.. Pray that Jesus will help us clean our temples so that we can more faithfully follow His example and live His love.
Please stay warm and healthy. Get "SHOT" as soon as possible. Many Blessings and Shalom

Prayer for the Holy Spirit
Holy Spirit, fan into flame the gifts I received in my Baptism and Confirmation. I want to receive the fire of Your love as your disciples did at Pentecost. Come with wonder and awe, with wisdom, understanding, and counsel, with courage and faith in You. Holy Spirit, may my actions witness to Your presence in my life. Help me to see the ways my strengths can serve others in their weakness. In all my interactions, I want to radiate love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Breathe new life into the world through me. Amen.

Lent Prayer Week 3 God of Mercy and Forgiveness, I know in my mind that you are
with me today and always, Always ready to release me from my sinful and destructive ways.
This third week of Lent, Help my heart believe completely
in your presence in my life, to fully accept Your love and forgiveness. In doing so, may I then share that same love and
forgiveness you have for me with everyone that I encounter. Lord, in this time of Lent, bring me back to You.

Journey with Christ
Make your connection to the cross this Lent as you pray our stations of the cross with members of our Seton staff. Each Friday, a new video will be released for viewing on our website and our St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Facebook page. Join various members of our pastoral staff as different versions of the Stations are prayed every week. We hope you enjoy the variety of prayer that will be offered and hope it will provide an opportunity to walk with Jesus on the way to the Cross.
Outdoor Stations! They were a popular destination of prayer last year and this year, after a clearing of a bit of snow, our outdoor stations are up and ready for you to pray! Station one begins in the West Parking lot. Keep an eye out for the signs. Then, follow stations 1 through 14 as they work their way along the back road of the church proper. Prayer guides are posted on each station, but you may also choose to listen to one of our indoor station recordings to accompany you. (see the "Journey with 4Christ" article above) Enjoy!
The Catholic Stewardship Appeal offers a unique opportunity to support Catholic life throughout the ten-county Archdiocese of Milwaukee with a single gift--a gift that helps sustain a broad spectrum of life-changing ministries and programs that meaningfully impact people's lives.
Please pray for the Good family as they prepare their daughter to receive the sacrament of Baptism on March 13, 2021, after 5:00 PM Mass. We are incredibly grateful for Elise Yvonne Good as she is welcomed into the Catholic Church. May this be the beginning of a life of ever-growing discipleship lived in the love and joy of our Christ, Jesus.
Contributions to the annual $8.1 million Catholic Stewardship Appeal are restricted for use in four key areas of ministry: x Serving Those in Need x Strengthening Parish Ministries and Promoting
Evangelization x Supporting Catholic Schools and Parish
Religious Education x Forming Priests, Deacons and Fostering Parish
Leadership
Dollars raised within the Archdiocese of Milwaukee stay here and are used solely for the purpose of supporting its ministries and programs. Many of these programs have no other means of financial support and their reach extends well beyond what any parish or school can provide on its own.
Visit the Seton website to view the 2021 Catholic Stewardship Appeal video located on the homepage.
REFLECT First Reading: In God's revelation to Moses of His "10 Commandments," seven of the ten Commandments regulate how we are to relate to each other. Which of these seven Commandments challenges you most? Second Reading: Paul speaks of Jesus as both the "power of God and the wisdom of God." How could you prove Paul's assertion to a non-believer? Gospel: John connects Jesus' cleansing of the Temple in Jerusalem to Jesus' bodily resurrection from the dead with a quote from Psalm 69: "Zeal for your house will consume me." During this season of Lent, how passionate is your faith?
