This course will focus on the unique aspects of what we mean by leadership in the biomedical community. This is an opportunity to explore the special skills, the core competencies, and the character traits of individuals who choose, or are chosen, to provide leadership in the biomedical community. In most BME graduate courses, especially in technical electives, the emphasis has been on learning how “to do” successful engineering. In this course, we will attempt to define what it takes “to be” a successful engineer. The course will be a combination of lectures and cases with several guest lecturers from industry. Cases will require a written analysis including answers to any questions posed.COURSE OUTCOMESGet exposed to all aspects of the biomedical industry: Industry Trends such as technology and innovation, market growth opportunities, regulatory overview and changesCompany functions such as engineering, business development, finance, marketing & salesLearn from case study analysis and reporting, guest lecturers and regular lectures about career paths available to someone with a Biomedical Engineering graduate degreeWork effectively as a team member and contributor for the classes that are team basedREQUIRED MATERIALSThere are no required books for the course. You will find a list of cases and reading materials on the Harvard Education website prior to the start of class.EXPECTATIONS AND REQUIREMENTSAttendance: Each week of this course you will be expected to come to the class prepared and on time. It is important to attend every class. You must let me know in advance if you plan to miss a class.Blackboard Learn Site: All course documents, assignments, and announcements will be available on the Blackboard Learn course site. Submit all assignments and evaluations to the Blackboard site.Academic Honesty: Plagiarism of ANY KIND will not be tolerated. Any assignment that exhibits plagiarism, copying, cutting and pasting, teamwork when teamwork is precluded will result in an F (zero credit) on that assignment. Depending on the seriousness of the offense, an F in the course may result.The Academic Conduct Code is available at Accommodation: Reasonable accommodations for eligible individuals will be provided in accordance with Boston University policies as described: dates: All assignments should be submitted by 11:59 pm EST on the day that they are due: electronic copies uploaded to Blackboard Learn site. In the event that Blackboard Learn should fail, you may email the assignments to vinit@bu.edu. Any assignment handed in late will lose 10% after one day, 25% after two days, and will not be graded after three days.ASSESSMENT (GRADING)Your final grade will be determined by a combination of individual and group assignments:Individual Assignments (45%): All individual assignments are to be performed separately.Class Participation (35%): This portion of final grades includes attendance, active participation during class and both live and online discussions.
