Directions: Respond to each of the prompts below with reference to both the book and reality.

Marking Period One

Everyone has secrets. At some point we all keep secrets for awhile and eventually let them out. What is the secret Melinda is keeping doing to her relationships? What effect do secrets have on our interactions with other people- both familial and friendly?

Marking Period Two

Speak is as much about identity as it is about rape. At this moment in the novel, what is Melinda’s identity? Explain. How does our identity change over time and why does it change?

Marking Period 3

Heather explains to Melinda that they are just different types of people and maybe they shouldn’t hang out together anymore.  Do you think that Heather and Melinda were ever really friends? What is the true meaning of friendship and how do we find these friends? Why do some friendships end and others stay strong well into adulthood?

Marking Period 4

Laurie Halse Anderson said, “All teenagers feel like outcasts, even the kids who, on the surface, appear to have everything. Adolescence is the period of perpetual doubt; cast out from childhood, unsure which door to the adult world one should choose.” Respond to this quote and relate it to both your own experience and Melinda’s experience.
