Documentation For Education Students Template

Education Students’ Portfolio Template

General Information:

The objective of this project is to create a professional web page using a template, which you will download from the SPU web site. You will need to use a computer with Microsoft FrontPage in order to download and add information to the template as well as a disk to save your work on. All of the links in the template are set up for you except for those connecting your personal web page and email address. You will need to add these links in yourself. This document will show you how to use the template and post it on the web using your Seattle Pacific University account. Remember to save you work as often to your floppy or zip disk.

Step One: Import the Template into FrontPage

Open FrontPage on any school computer buy clicking Start>Office>FrontPage. You can directly import the template into FrontPage by clicking File > New > Web. A new window will appear, under Options erase all information in the box and type (A:\) or (D:\) to reference the drive that your floppy or zip disk is located. Next click on the Import Web Wizard to begin the process of importing the template into FrontPage.

A window may appear asking if you would like to create a new web, click Yes.

A second window will appear and ask you to specify if you want to import the template from a directory of files or from a World Wide Web site. Select from a World Wide Web site and enter spu.edu/online/edtemplate in the location box and click Next.

A third window will appear titled Download Amount. You will want to make sure that all of the boxed are Unchecked before clicking Next and then Finish. A dialog box will open asking if you would like to continue importing the web, click Yes. Another box will follow asking if you would like to replace the tempindex.htm file, click Yes again. FrontPage will now begin to import the template.

Step 2: Locating Pages to Edit

You can now enter you information into the template by clicking on each of the pages located on the left hierarchy. (ex. index.htm and category01.htm) If you double click on index.htm the first page of the template will appear. You will notice that there is a separate page for each of the categories that you will be entering information into.

Step 3: Entering Information

To enter information into the template click inside the marked table and begin typing. You can format the text any way you would like and it is even possible to paste a Word document into the table. When you are finished with the first page you can click on the respective pages located in the hierarchy to access and edit the other pages. To remove the extra tables with notes Right Click and select Delete. Remember to save your work often!

Step 4: Connecting Your Personal Web Page

All of the links will be connected once you are finished except for those connecting the first page to your personal web page and your email to a page that will allow visitors to send you mail. If you do not have a personal web page on your SPU account you can delete the cell containing “personal web page”. To do this highlight the cell and Right Click then select Delete Cell. (skip to step 5)

If you have a personal web page on your SPU account you have two options. One is to import that page into FrontPage using the same steps as above and the second is to save your current web page files to the disk you are going to use for this project. You will need to make links from your current homepage to the new professional homepage before you post it on the server. To do this type home on your web page and create a hyperlink back to the professional web page. (see step 5 if you need help creating a link) As well, you will have to rename your current page something other than index.htm to avoid problems when posting the new web page. To rename your page click on the page open the page and save it under a different name.

Note: If you used FrontPage to create your current homepage you are in good shape. If you used another program such as Macromedia Dreamweaver the process should work almost the same way, however to be safe double check all of your links to make sure that they work after posting them on the SPU server.

Step 5: Connecting Your Email

To set up an email link you will first have to enter the email address you would like to use for this page. To attach a hyperlink to your email account, highlight the address and Right Click, select Hyperlink Properties at the bottom of the pop-up menu. When the new window appears click the Envelope button on the lower right hand side of the screen.

Enter your email address and click OK. Before you close the edit Edit Hyperlink Window you may want to change the font color of the new hyperlink so it is visible. Click Style > Format > Font and select a color (we recommend white). When you are finished click Ok three times to return to the page, your email link will now be active on your web page. Remember that you will only be able to see the active links when you click on the Preview tab located at the bottom of the window or and when your page is viewed in a web browser.

Step 6: Paul Account and Password

In order to post or (FTP) your new web page onto the SPU server you will need an SPU Paul account. If you do not have an account go to Computer Help Desk > Web Tools > Create Your Personal Web Page > Get a Paul Account on the SPU web page to set up a new account. If you have an account you may need to change your password because your original will not work after 120 days. If you have a Paul Account but you cannot remember your password click on Paul Account Password. (spu.edu/help/webtools/createwebpage.html)

Step 7: FTP Your Page to the Paul Server

Once you have an account on Paul you are now ready to post your web page on the SPU server. You will need to make sure the html files are saved on a disk in case you would like to edit your web page later. These files should already be on your disk if you saved your changes while working on the template. You can FTP your files onto the server by using WS FTP, which can be found under the Start > Network Tools > WS_FTP32 on all SPU computers. In order to learn how to post your web page using WS FTP look at the tutorial on the next page.

FTP Your Pages to the Web Server

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and allows you to copy your web pages to the SPU web server. A shareware program such as WS FTP can be used to FTP your files. This program can be downloaded at . Perform a search for WS FTP to find the file. Once you have downloaded and installed the program, you can use the following instructions to FTP your files to the web server

1. Open the WS FTP program. The opening screen should look like the image below:

3. Next click OK. A new window should appear like below. The files located on the left side (under local system) are the files on your computer. The files located on the right side (under remote system) are the files on Paul.

4. To locate the files to be copied from your computer, use the ChgDir button on the left side under local systems to locate them. Once they are found, you use the arrow pointing to the right to copy them to Paul. You will want to change the directory on Paul to public_html first (by clicking on the ChgDir button on the right side).

Note: If you do not see a public_html directory on the right hand side click MKDir to create a new directory called public_html.
