Directions

We will be using the 4 Square Method to write an essay on someone who played an important role in black history. While the writing will be completed in class, the research and visual aid will be completed on your own. Students will present their papers and visual aids on Tuesday, February 5th.

Research: The essay will not be written about their entire life (where they were born, raised, and died). The body paragraphs of your essay will focus on three reasons your person is important to black history. When researching, your focus should be towards finding events or things they did to make them famous. (For example, my detail paragraphs for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will be the Montgomery Bus Boycott, “I Have a Dream” speech, and being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize).

Visual Aid: You will also need to include a visual aid. This can be a picture, timeline, diagram, etc. You may not simply print a picture from the internet. It is expected that you complete the visual aid at home.

Possible people to write about (you may choose someone not listed). You may NOT choose Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I will be using him as my example as we go through the 4 Square Steps together.

Due Dates:

* Thursday, January 17th: Notify your teacher by today who you have chosen to do your project on.

* Tuesday, January 22nd: Bring your research to class. You should already have read through it and know what your three body paragraphs are going to focus on. We will begin our 4 Square brainstorm in class today.

*Tuesday, February 5th: Visual aids are due and presentations of the essay and visual aids begin.
